fthg42
By the way, does anybody know if there's somewhere where it lists the pronunciations for the Dune vocabulary?
nemafakei
As it's based on arabic, try looking for stuff on that.
fthg42
ok...yes, that does seem like a good start. :)Thanks. :D
dportela
Well, I know Bi-la Kaifa should be said:"Bee lah kah-ee-fah"But that's just my other memory bringing up those Arabic ancestors again... ;)
Mahdi
What about Bi lal Kaifa then?:)
dportela
Never heard of that, it's not in the Terminology of the Imperium. ::)
Mahdi
Nope, but its in the book. Interchangable with Bi La Kaifa.
Vanguard3000
I noticed that as well. I think it's a typo, but don't know much arabic, so I could be wrong. As for the pronounciations, go to http://www.flg21.com/dune/ and check the links. Somewhere, there is a site which shows opinions on pronunciation. Although many of them are pretty strange IIRC.
Mahdi
Possibly a typo, but seeing as each spelling turns up as often as the other, it's pretty difficult to tell which is the typo and which isn't. And if it was a mere typo, I'm kinda surprised that it is used in multiple editions. But, then again, there is muad'dib and maud'dib.
Vanguard3000
Maud'Dub?! Where did you see that?
Mahdi
Not Maud'dub, maud'dib. The a and u keep switching places. There is a thread about it.
Vanguard3000
Sorry, the u was my own typo.Is this in the original novel where it switches between Muad'dib and Maud'dib?
Mahdi
Not usre, smeone else brought this up, not me. It's in another thread.
cccp7x
When pronouncing Dune words one must always remember that they are pronounced phonetically. Therefore Bi-la Kaifa would be pronounced "by-la kai-fa"
