"A creature who has spent his life creating one particular representation of his selfdom will die rather than become the antithesis of that representation."

Question:  Do you think the man who follows through with this is weaker or stronger than the man who adapts and goes on?

hmm, I dont really know but want to contribute.

I think that if a person creates a repesentation of himself that isnt really who they are as a person, then it is shallow. Now if a person IS the antithesis of what they do and act on in their life without ever giving what they believe up, then they and their ideas will live on. I personally think it depends on the person. We all adapt but sometimes there are things greater than ourselves that never change, and things adapt around it as a centerpiece.

The man who stands by his principles, even at the cost of his life, clearly has great faith in his beliefs and the personal strength and integrity to stand by them. Thus he could be said as having 'inner strength' so to speak. On the other hand, it could also be that he is afraid of facing up to a new reality, or a new self. It could be that he is clinging to outdated and impossible ideals. In these cases it is fear and stubbornness, not integrity, that cause the unyielding attitude.

The man who abandons his principles in order to survive, however, does not automatically become 'weak.' He may be a coward, true, but he may also simply be practical, or just not care about principles in general. Survival ≠ strength, but at the same time death ≠ strength either.

In other words, it depends on why the man chooses to adapt or die, not which decision he makes.
