Well, what version of Windows, if it is windows, are you using ? If its 2000 or xp, can you check event log to see why its shutting down ?

Event log can be found in control panel under Admin tools on XP...

More info should help...

Does it make a difference if the device is plugged in before boot ? What about if its plugged in while the computer is booting ?

when i plug it in when the computer is off, the computer doesnt even turn on.

when i plug it in while the computer is on, it just shuts down & it'll restart if i pull it out.

(since i'm computer deficient) how exactly do i read the event log to find out why the computer shut down?

Its a hardware issue. Do as the man Gryp says and see if it happens with other USB devices.

Can you get a bios upgrade for your motherboard ? Check with the manufacturer...
