I have just purchased HL2 and after installing it works fine.... however for no apparent reason Counter Strike no longer works. After launching the game, it goes black and crashes to desktop before it reaches the menu page. This happens every time. Half-life 2 and HL2 Deathmatch still work fine.

Could it be a driver issue perhaps? If so, could someone tell me the most stable release of the XP drivers for a Nvidia Gefore card?

Thank you.

Well...  to be honest it took AGES to get HL2 working and I won't bore you with the details.

I have removed CS:S and then re-installed to no effect. I would remove the whole HL2 install...but I fear that I might not be able to install it again, due to earlier problems

Lol sorry, I'll remember you are one of the smarter ones. ;)

Try deleting the config.cfg file in the "C:Program FilesSteamSteamApps<email/username>Counter-strike source" folder.

Gave that a shot...but it didn't help, same crash.... would be nice of the game to give me an error...are there any error log files?

Thanks for the idea.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

yeh there is but its full of mumbo-jumbo. I think some are held in a folder called 'errorlogs'. some files called *.mdmp also contain debug error dump stuff, but its not for human eyes...

you could try to edit the shortcut of css. In the 'my games' window of steam. You can right-click on CSS and then go to 'launch properties'. I am not sure about the proper parameter, but you should try to force it to run on DirectX 8 as default, and perhaps even some low resolution. I thought the params for this was:

-width 800 -height 600 -directx 8 -windowed

the one i am not sure about is the directx one, but it is very important. Perhaps 'dxmode' is the one. Else, try searching for "CSS Launch properties" on google.

no problem. Of course, when this works (IF it works... ;)) you should try to get fullscreen working , and so on. I am curious though, what kind of video card do you have, and what version of DirectX?

If all of this fails, you could try to find some way to redownload the counter-strike source gcf file. I thought you could do that by simply deleting the original gcf file (or rename it) so it will be redownloaded. I've read that some versions where corrupted and therefor causing trouble.

Tried the advice, and got this error:

"The instruction a "0x01285030" referenced memory at "0x01285030". The memory could not be "read" ".

well at least computer have evolved enough to give friendly error messages at last ;).

I'm gunna have a look around the steam forums with this new error information, see what turns up. Any further advice more than appreciated.

edit: forgot to say, that I will try deleting the gcf file next
