I've gotten two emails from a certain person. I am unable to tell if it is a real person, or just some scam to see if my gmail account is active. It was sent directly to my account it seems. The email is from someone with an email ending with @metasolv.com

First E-mail reads:

Dear Mom,

I think this is your new email address?

Just wanted to let you know that your card for Ellery arrived yesterday.  I have taped it to the pink & white Hawaiian T-Shirt, which is wrapped in blue Hawaiian-print paper (from the ABC Store in Waikiki).  So the blue card envelope matches perfectly.  You must be psychic!

We got the check, too.  Thanks & Aloha,

<insert name>

(Hope you have a sublet now & that you like it.)

The bottom part got me thinking, especially where it says

If you have received this email in error, please immediately notify the sender by return email and delete this email from your system.

Made me think that it is a new way to check if the email account is active. Although according to the email, this person is wondering if this is the correct email address and not spam or something.

I got another similiar email today from the same person, although there was another email added to the recipients list which is a gmail account that has a person's name to it (example: [EDIT z1x2]).

Just wondering if any advice on whether to reply and inform about the wrong email address, or whether this is a scam to see if email account is active.

Maybe we are related in some way! :O

I wouldn't reply personally. If it arrived in your inbox, then you having it and/or not obeying it's instructions is in no way illegal. You didn't request it or agree to obey any instructions on an email sent to you by that person, so I don't really see how it's in any way possible a binding contract. Furthermore, if it's sent to an email address that has your name in it (as the extra address in the recipient list (big red flag right there) indicates), then you've got to ask yourself why anyone would name their daughter Andrew. I mean, I realize it's Hawaii (or at least comming from Hawaii), but still, that's over the top. Furthermore, given that it's comming from a US sender to a Canada recipient, if they *did* want to press charges, it would be an extreamly large hassel for them, given the size of the offense.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that the Metasolv company has no offices in the state of Hawaii.

Mind you, I'm no lawer. But I dare say I know a scam when I see it.

I also recieved an email from accounts-noreply@google.com to my hotmail account which was used to initiate one of my gmail accounts.

To initiate the process for resetting the password for your [EDIT z1x2] Google Account, visit the link below

Thank you for using Google.

This is a post-only mailing.  Replies to this message are not monitored or answered.

Part of the url is marked out for security reasons, it is just a bunch of numbers.

I have no idea why they sent that to me. I may have changed a setting, but it had nothing to do with setting a new password. I have not changed the password eithor.

The link works, and sends me to a page exactly like the attached image.

Does this mean someone may be hacking that account (different account than mentioned above)? Should I change the passwords for both accounts?

Hmm, if I did send her an "email" it should include Andrew Sherry in the sent email, as that is what is used for outgoing messages.

Find and download spoofstick for FF. It tells you if you are on the server you think you are (to avoid spoofing). So far its been totally useless to me but it looks nice and it does work, just no one spoofs me in that way.

It would help to show you if the page you are entering into is google's page.

Hmm, Got another message from this person that thinks I'm someone else.

Guess I should email her and tell her to stop emailing me.

Gmail has good spam filters ;)
