My problem is that msn does not show other users pictures any more (display image that is in chat box). I don't see the tab that is used to expand/collapse their image. I can choose a display picture for myself.

This started after installing and uninstalling Miranda.

I have reinstalled messenger (with Miranda not installed) and it didn't work.

I get the same effect when for some reason the internet connection times out when I use MSN messenger . . . first the text field grays out, then the picturedissapears.

You need to quit MSN and then restart it to get it working as it should again. Just waiting for the conenction to get back and leave MSN on isn't an option.

Anyway, for you. Is Windows messenger installed ?

You could try to de-install that together with MSN messenger and then reinstal MSN messenger. Remove the windows MSN intergration of your profile to just to be shure .

Well I hvae not been able to get the display image working ever, since I uninstalled Miranda.

I don't think I have windows messenger, at least it is not in add/remove programs.

it should be in config - software - windows components.. . :)

just had another look at Miranda. . although I doubt it's something with Messenger.

You did use MSN messenger before you tried Miranda and the avatars where working at that time ?

Oh yes the avatars in messenger were working fine before I installed Miranda.

Tried what you said. (I think, under add/remove programs, then installed windows components, then I unchecked windows messenger.) After doing that I uninstalled windows messenger. Then I installed them both again.

It didn't work.

Eww , windows mesenger installed an dolder version msn 4.7 along with msn 6.0. So O now have to msn program to use.

There is no extra button or anything.

****!

What nyar said was right. It isn't called extra, it is called tools/options.

I guess I missed that somehow. But I checked the box and it is now showing the display picture. Now all I have to do is uninstall the old msn version.

Thanks all.

Not older version, different version. 4.7 is latest WINDOWS Messenger which came with Windows XP. MSN Messenger is at 6.2 currently. As far as I know, Windows messenger doesnt allow the viewing of pictures.

You have to go to add/remove programs, then click on windows components on the left side. At the very bottom of the list should be windows messenger. Deselect it and press next. It will uninstall it. You can always install it at another time.

I dont think it is in the normal list of items/components that can be uninstalled. I remember having to find a file and remove the letter ",hide" from a file first. Will try to remember which one for you...

Or just google search for it.

Lol !

I am sure it is there on your install Nyar. Are you shure it is WINDOWS mesenger and not MSN...just asking... :-[

Ok, Let me google search for the file you need to unhide to uninstall Windows Messenger, which by the way on normal install of WinXP (I thought for both home and pro) is not uninstallable.

Found the file: C:WINDOWSinfsysoc.inf

Find/Replace all occurances of ",hide". Now you can uninstall it just like normal programs, and a few others will show up too.

Hope that helps..
