You beat me to it, Ordos, I was just about to say that the Iraqi Police were in control of the mosque. It seems the Mehdi Army just... abandoned it?

I'd say they'd have a better chance defending it when the IP came after them. I don't know the Iraqi Prime Minister all that well, but I'd have to say he was willing to go into the mosque and clear them out. Now... having all those Mehdi in once place? That'd be a decapitating blow to al-Sadr if he lost a battle in that mosque and didn't destroy it at the same time. That, and maybe al-Sadr doesn't want to blow up the building containing the tomb of the founder of his faith. Which at least proves he's got principles. In any case, all that helps to explain why he left it. Why he would fall back to Sadr City? The district named for his father and a vicious house-to-house war if the IP ever came after him.

Vicious house to house fight.  Only location left of major support.  And if he does run for election in the new government, a good place to campaign.

I suppose he could always run to his friends in Iran, if they'd take him.

Ha, now they're saying the IP never stormed the mosque and that al-Sadr is still there. I wonder if anyone knows what's going on -- besides al-Sadr.

Could be publicity..."The Cleric Who Defied The Evil Imperial American Pigs And Lived" sort of thing.  Lives, tourist dollars, defiling of holy shrine...

It seems the last thing they are thinking about is the economic situation in their country. Tell me, how does blowing up their own oil wells, or murdering the people sent to repair them,  helping their economic situation? Every single bomb that goes off, every school/police station bombed will cost money to rebuild.

Nothing they have done in recent months shows that they appreciate the economic result of what they are doing. al-Sadr is therefore a big problem for not just the Americans but for the majority of Iraqis who are going to inherit a country destroyed by pointless civil unrest.

That is a smart point indeed but al-Sadr's movement is more political than military and it is also very popular among the Shi'ite muslims. The US has not only Shi'ite muslims in Iraq to consider but the estimated 120 million worldwide (Iran, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, India and Pakistan) who are watching this sitution and the outcome will no doubt affect US "interests" in these countries.

Lovely Iran...having recently said it is considering a Pre-Emptive Strike against US Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, because it feels threatened.  I know with over 200k US soldiers on either side of my nation on Bush's Hit List, I would too.

Iran vs. the US, bring it on! ;D

I'd prefer not.  Several issues, anti-American Muslim unity, actual WMDs to be used against us, the cost in lives and money on both sides, rebuilding costs, there's not really a reason other than the Hit List...Axis of Evil List.

Anyhow on Najaf, supposedly Grand Ayatollah Al Sistani, back from London and his heart treatment, braved the fire and walked into the Imam Ali Mosque.  Supposedly he has negotiated an abandonment to take place by the end of tommorow.

I congratulate Grand Ayatollah Al Sistani on what has been the successful end of hostilities, may his calming influence continue to be a force for many years to come.
