If the French feel offended that Americans renamed a primarily American food, then they are overly sensitive, and probably have insecurity issues.

Furthermore, I still think that the French are more associated with the concept of surrender and white flags than most countries, including the United States.

I did not say the opposite

My point is simply that the adoption of a new flag is not newsworthy in comparison to all the problems Iraq is still facing. I don't see why the Governing Council is debating about what color to make the flag when it could be... oh, I don't know... running the country.

since they are all distinguished highly educated men i suppose they could.... oh, I don't know...... do both at the same time.

Tell me .. do you stop chewing your gum when you have to walk Dan?

;)

No, but I do tend to start walking and chewing at the same rate, especially when I'm focusing on neither action. (That's not some kind of extended metaphor, just a response.)

Do you really think that a new flag deserves this much attention? And how much governing has the Governing Council been doing, anyway?

I actually have no idea. Since US military engineer forces are distributing most of the humanitarian aid, and US contractors are rebuilding the infastructure, I don't know what the GC could be doing. My best guess is that its trying to rally the support of the various interest groups in Iraq so that any new government that is formed has the support of the vast majority of the Iraqi people. I think that they are trying to play the game of diplomacy; to compromise, make agreements, make legal precedent, and so on. If the US Coalition is the practical side of the occupation, I would say that the GC is the legal front-line preparing the country for eventual unification and democratic government.

My mates idea of the Iraq Flag (sorry Dragoon, it was too hard to resist!)[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Fedaykin, why do most of your posts constitute flagrantly inflammatory comments towards Americans? Leo recently posted, and you said that the position of the Israeli government was wrong, yet you understood Leo's patriotism. I, too, am patriotic -- and I, too, disagree with much of what my nation is doing, yet you do not treat me or my country with the same respect as you treated Israel's -- and you disagree with the politics of both nations. You do it repeatedly, and I do not understand why. Do you discriminate between Americans and others? Or, is it now chic to be anti-American?

I like the idea of the flag myself, and I think it is pretty. hehe

No I like the idea of the two rivers underneath the crescent. I mean islam should be displayed like that, it is an important cultural and religious thing to the overwhelming majority of iraq.

Hey, it's not as if you can blame him - plenty of Americans find it "cool" to be anti-French, too...

But getting back to the subject of this topic, it seems to me that the new Iraqi flag was designed with the specific purpose of pissing off as many Iraqis as possible in mind. First of all... a blue crescent? A BLUE crescent?? The crescent - a symbol of Islam - should be green - the colour of Islam. And speaking of colours, the entire colour scheme of this flag is utterly absurd for an Arab nation. The traditional colour scheme of the Arab world is green/white/black/red. Certainly no blue and no yellow!

Actually, I think I've met more French-lovers than French-haters in the United States. If you want to get American girls, be French.

Anyway, I like the design of the new Iraqi flag, just make the crescent green, and the two lower bars red alternating with black. Keep the background white.

Jeez. Such a simple solution; it keeps the interests of all parties at heart and doesn't piss anyone off.

Yes you're rignt ! But we hadn't change our flag after the WWII ! But if they want to do this, why not ? But I think that Iraqi's mind is not to search a new flag I think ! They don't care about I think !

Why black ? Colour of Somalian flag is blue !

Green= colour of paradise, Islam

Red = life

The others colours I don't know !

There isn't amercan-hate meaning in France ! Just a Bush-hate meaning ! French and American are brothers ! Remember  ;) ! We're all Americans !

I'm not a Chirac lover (no non no !) ! I don't hate Chirac ! But I'm not one of his fans ! But I was agree with him about the war (in fact french people was not agree too !)

There was french haters wave because in Hisory of USA, in opposite of Germans, Italians, Russians, Irish... French were not immigrate in USA ! So the american press can attack French people out of French communities counterstrike !

Now, we ask ourself : why we hate America ?  In fact, we looove america, but we love them too much ! And like in a family, there are diagrees !

Sorry I speak english of my best ! :-[

Err... ???

Fedaykin, you can post in French and I can traslate it for you if you wish - at least in some PRP topics. Your English is... quite difficult to understand.

Anyway, here's an interesting article regarding the American attitude towards France:

Meet Mr. Germany and Ms. France

Aww, thanks, Fedaykin. I like France, too. It's just that sometimes you use the word "America" when you should be using "Bush". There are lots of Americans that don't like Bush, too! America and France have always been close; in the Napoleonic Wars, we built warships for you! (Sorry, Brits...)

Anyway, I am sorry if I sounded too harsh!

The blue crescent is not right. The mesopotamian and (to an extent) kurdish references are great ideas, but a blue crescent? Why? It seems that the attempt has been made to change absolutely everything about the flag.

I knew it! I knew there was a historical link via hatred of the British but did anyone believe me? Noooo! ;)

Not a good idea, but I think that's what they were trying to do regardless.
