I had an interesting thought, recently. Pretty much everyone calls Bush a liar, but is this the case? Personally, I think the man was fooled by Saddam Hussein, who was in turn fooled by his own government.

Anyway. Let us assume Bush is a dishonest man. Let us also assume Bush is smart enough to know how important WMD evidence is. What does he do? He plants evidence, obviously.

Let us assume the opposite. Let us assume he is an honest, if single-minded man. He knows how important WMDs are, but truly believes there to be WMDs in Iraq. He finds none, admits he made a mistake (which he is doing) and is on the way out office-wise.

I do not think Bush lied about WMDs, I think he was completely wrong about them. One cannot lie if he believes what he is saying to be the truth.

Now, what I think went down in the White House of Iraq. Bear in mind that Saddam's government is a system in which the people who rise to the top are the people who are best at covering their asses. Saddam goes to his ministers and asks them to make him WMDs. They say that they will. However, knowing that they cannot (I had the pleasure of speaking with a man who once worked on atomic engineering. Iraq does not have the necessary equipment or personnel to make the bomb. Trust me.), they make it look like they are building the bomb, but make only facsimilies, or make a half-hearted attempt. However, Saddam believes he has the bomb.

Now, when Saddam begins playing coy with the West, the West thinks he has the bomb. I recently read a book published in 1999 which alludes to Saddam Hussein "definately pursuing the bomb to become an international bigwig". Bush believed it, and I believe many Europeans did as well. I remember reading something that said that Chirac was actually surprised that Saddam did not have WMDs. It seems he had us all fooled. Why? Because he himself was fooled by the system that he created. He created a system in which one had to lie to survive, because nothing short of perfection was acceptable to Saddam, else he would have you killed. Since perfection is not easily achieved, the most likely result is falsehood.

And thus, this is how this whole situation happened. Bush, being somewhat unreasonable, but convinced, like many others, that Saddam had WMDs, did his thing. And, in the end, I'll bet no one was more surprised than Saddam upon discovering that WMDs did not exist.

That's like saying Hitler didn't know about the death camps :P

ouch! ... Inoc penalized 1 point for hitting below the belt.... ok back to your corners and wait for the bell to ring this time.

Gunwounds, I'm Jewish, when coming from me, the belt is considerably lower.

And I mean it. The idea of these dictators being duped by their deputies left and right has no basis in reality as far as I'm concerned.

Bush made a joke of the fact that 600 Americans, hundreds of foreigners, and countless Iraqi innocents had died so that he could settle his vendetta against Saddam.

I am deeply offended by this.

he was poking fun at himself for not finding the weapons... he thought you liberals would appreciate it since you do it to him on a daily basis...

I don't know about anyone else, but when I say, "You and/or your administration lied to the American people to justify a war for the aggrandizement of national power," I'm not laughing.

People can't mock themselves, they can only make a feeble attempt to laugh with us and fail miserably. This sounds like an attempt to get some fast-fleeing supporters to come back.
