The ridable worms are the ones that move horizontally, as opposed to the ones that shoot straight up out of the ground.

And I'm not sure, but I think the ridable worms are (as far as coding goes) different from the worms that are already on the map.  That is, a thumper will create a new worm to be ridden, rather than use one of the ones already on the map.

A surface worm is the uncontrolled worm that's on the map whether there's Fedaykin around or not.  The "non-surface" worms, if you mean the ridable ones, only come when you thump for it (there's no cosmetic difference).  The worms that come straight up and eat your stuff (the largest ones) are imosssible to detect until you see that ring of electricity.
