You may just get a cheap sound card and invest your money into a top of the line graphics card but a good sound card really helps, I ordered a creative 5.1 audigy($70) and card with my comp and man is it good, I was listening to some jurassic 5 and it was reallt crisp clean and really sharp.

I've always been fond of Creative soundcards. They never caused me any problems. I know the newer cards are a bit overpriced, but man the sound is excellent. I currently have the Audigy II platinum. Hooked up to my steroe the sound is amazing with games in suround sound :)

same here, every computer I own or have owned had a Creative soundcard in it at some point. At LAN parties I take the sound from a headphone, when at home the computer is hooked up to my SONY ES amplifier. .adn I love the sound every time. . ;)

yea I use an Altec LAnsing headset most of the time so I don't disturb others while I game, but the headphones sometimes make my ears hurt :P, It's fun cranking up the bass and volume on my system and playing BattleField 1942, when the shells crash it really makes hte floor shake :D :D ;D ;)
