Press Ctrl Alt Delete then select the processers tab, click on the process you wish to end and ok.

Carefull with processes that aren't started by a user. As long as it says system, I would leave them running. Where ever it says Username, feel free to end them savely.

those might be the default required processes .. although there might be additional ones. Depending on what you have installed on your system.

As example.. . I am at an WinXp computer right now, although loged in with a Novell client. If I would blindly trust on the list provided by you and close my novellclient.exe [ or something like that ;) ] my user will be loged out or have no local rights even before I realise what I just did.

So depending on your installation there might be other processes that need to be running. :)

Hmm, 1+ year later I am stuck again, which processes to end and not to end?

I got aloooooooooooooot of processes to delete and I don't know where to start ???

I got windows XP pro with service pack 2 and norton antivirus 2004 are the only important processes.

Can I shut down anything that doesn't say Symentic corporation / microsoft corporation?

you can even shutdown Microsoft stuff.

I have attached a screeny from my laptop.. .

a short explenation,

the first are display drivers for my ATI, second AVG antivirus software, Sygate firewall, Novell client stuff, Spybot stuff and the last one PGP stuff for my disk encryption.

In short, most stuff you can just delete from there. If you don't know it or doesn't sound familliar disable it. Reboot and if you miss an important thing from your desktop or your system. enable it again. :)

hmzl, if it's not MS and you don't recognise what it is. Disable it. Sounds easy and to be hounest it's an really chea advice. Although that's how I usually do it. Look which service it is. What does it do and then conclude if you need it.

that way you can also shutdown windows Help and Messaging services. . stuff like that. Although If it's Windows and you are not shure. Keep it on.

Don't delete to much at the same time and do a lot of reboots to see if everything is still working.

A crappy advice, but on individual bases I think it works best. :)
