  1. About Blizzard... I don't like the fact that you can only select few units. It's a problem both in Warcraft and Starcraft series. I don't like about building system, because you can't efficiently make war and build new units and such. What's good in Blizzard games is story line and ideas. But the engine is obsolete. But in TA... You can make factories build as many units as you want. And you can also chain commands, I don't how would I explain it. That's definitely the best engine and best interface I've seen. The game itself has rather simple idea and no real story line, but interface is incredible when compared to any WW or Blizz game. Edric, If you're writing an article about what should new Dune game be like. You should definitely try TA, because of the interface. I'd say, it's something you need to know before you can specify your vision from new Dune.
  2. #6 More unique technology for houses Yes, I'm running our of ideas...already:) But it's not that bad, probably just said one too many times. In Dune2k we have few special units, or special ability to each of the houses. There should be more. The buildings should look considerably different, not maybe the wind trap but some others. And you would only have very few basic units, others would be house-only. The main themes: Noble Atreides, Insidious Ordos, Evil Harkonnen should be carried out with more detail. It's pretty well done in Dune2k, but you could add some special units to make Atreides even more noble and ordos even more insidious and....you know. If all ordos units would be little faster, all harkonnen units little heavier, all atreides units little...intermediate(?). Of course if it would be done so, Harkonnen could prove to be much easier to play. Only those with intrest to more complex tactics would chooce the ordos.
  3. Now, I'd like to see that working. I've played a lot of RTS games and never had I seen any better interface than one in TA. Anyone with this interface has a huge advantage over the others, in any case. I can't really see this happening. I mean, for example, in Blizzard games you can build units simultaneously because of the peon system, WW is very different on this one. How would you make it work? Spice should stay unlimited? What if WW would do the classic "Tiberium tree", just that in this case it would be spice mound and it would spread the Spice infinitely over the surrounding area, of course the spice wouldn't grow like tiberium or ore(expanding ore...that's funny).
  4. What kind of pro hackers spent their time specially modifying their .dat file in order to be able to cheat in Dune2k at Westwood Online. Get a life, cheaters.
  5. Yes. I've seen the topic. I think you're taking this too seriously. There's already lack of players on Dune2k, don't make it any worse:)...well it's your choice...but a. Cheaters are everywhere and they will be...until the Thought Control comes out. There're always these individuals who don't have what it takes to play fair. I've faced it in many games I've played on the net. But they're always a minority. Usually you can play fair games, with fair people. Not always, sometimes someone cheats, you just have to get over it. If it happens all the time I could understand you reasons. But I believe there are only that many cheaters and you can still play fair games...by time to time. Anyway, think over about this retirement.
  6. I know that their mysterious and probably non-existing "the team" will never reply. Can't help you more than that. You should try and search the answer from programming communities. Participate in some newsgroups and I believe you'll find what you need.
  7. Well, it's many, but not too much. Let's see... TA: 2 sides C&C: 2 sides SC: 3 sides Dune: 3 sides It's usual that in RTS games only has about 2-3 factions. But why not more? They should be considerably different, in order to really make them interesting. It might prove to be hard to come up with ideas for 8 different houses. All of them should have something unique. But, it can be done. Just doesn't seem very likely, unfortunately. #4 Fog of War This belongs into category of simple but working ideas. If not even a revolution to RTS genre. WW doesn't seem to think so...where they should. For this is the one thing that makes a game truly more complex and demands more tactical approach. Ordos would really have use for their advanced espionage and saboteur tactics, would there be FoW. It isn't realistic that once your unit has be blown away in enemy base. You can still magically see every sand flea till the end of time. And nothing can blur you perfect vision. WW...please.
  8. I divide RTS genre into three distinct section, they are listed with their prime differentia: #1 Blizzard-style or Peon-style There are special units how do all the work and collect all the resources. Resources are always limited. You can only select that many units. #2 C&C-style You may not create simultaneously. You always have HQ which has huge importance. You collect one resource with harvesters and that resource is unlimited.(Dune2k) (#3 TA-style) Much like Blizzard. Except "peons" work differently. And a VERY different gathering of resources. Or...What do you think? I think the entire resource management is the one thing that is that different in these three genres, so it makes them really different games. Of course, all game developers have their own vision, which marks their creations. I think Dune3 should have new engine that is more like one in TA, WW could certainly learn to make very interesting storylines without very useless and boring movies...from Blizzard, of course. In any case, the user interface in WW's games is obsolete, they should seriously advance it.
  9. Eight(8) houses? Well, why not, but a...it's many. There are few ideas for Dune3... #1 Sandstorms Think about it. What could be more profound addition than the sandstorms which, I imagine, are quite usual on the face of Arrakis. They cause electric storms which would effect the electric equipment, unless protected from it. They would make moving slower and would make it hard to se units inside of such a storm. They would also damage units/building and spice fields would be burier and revealed. They could also bury rock formations, units and...stuff. This would certainly require more advanced engine but it could be one of those revolutionary new ideas in RTS games. #2 Medic is a basic unit Within all armed forces ever to be made by humanity there has always been medics. Why the future would be different? The medics are no special units, they're the very basic foundation of any army. If you can't patch up your units when they're injured, you'll soon notive you ahve no army. Every house should have them, medics should be matter of course. Continue with this, next(#3) great idea, please. I'd be interested to hear it.
  10. Being able to almost succesfully make the Dune2 work, still some problems with the music... I noticed that I liked the sound effects of Dune2 much more than those in Dune2k. For example the machine gun of trike/quad seem more realistic in original game. Generally the sound effects might be better in Dune2k, but there are few sound I'd like to change. The annoying thing is that WW uses these same, just a bit altered sound effects over and over again. They don't develop sounds any further, they just stick with the old which is bad. And I definitely agree that missile tank, or in fact 'Launcher' in Dune2 is far more realistic than one in Dune2k. I also think that trikes are under powered when facing infantry in Dune2k, they should've been better.
  11. We had a very long discussion, with my friend, about can you beat the original. We even made mathematical and geometric model. I think the conclusion was that nothing can actually be better than the first one was, because there were nothing before the first one(now, this doesn't really have much to do with this subject) I think Dune2000 is a remake of Dune2, despite of all differences. You pointed out many things I missed, like the color of the sky. In any case, WW's goal was to "make Dune2 again" with new graphics and enchanced music. And that's what they did. I think Dune2 has great musical score. And so do Dune2000, at least there are few legendary musical experiences to be heard. Never the less the title of best musical score belongs to TA. You're free to disagree if you have really played it. Needless to say it's a great game. Dune2k is very different one, so they won't end up stepping on each others toes. Both have their own unique perspective.
  12. When I run Dune2 without sound, it works well. But in case I try it with sounds, it complains about the lack of memory. Now I've tried to solve it by creating a short-cut to program and editing its memory settings. This should work, but nope. I have also tried editing CONFIG.sys and AUROEXEC.bat without much success. What should I do to make it work?
  13. Personally. I'd prefer that Dune3 stays as RTS game. But the heroes are good idea. Adding them would really give a great depth to the game. Also there should be more complicated missions, like assasination mentioned above. Something similar to StarCraft, mission that would carry out the grand story in some concrete way. Missions with several goals and purposes, even some secondary objectives thus making accomplishment of them all unnecessary.
