First thing that comes into mind would be that with those jumpers you can either set it to Drive A or Drive B. However, that's normally selected via cable and BIOS and not via jumpers.

Looking closer to the specs, there's 2 data transfer rate's. My guess is that with those jumpers you can set the data transfer rate. Have you tried setting the jumpers in those two positions as described on the page ? If so, with either setting, did anything change ?

Ok, I've taken this floppy to test in a pc of a friend.

As I said my connector (the one that goes to the floppy near the twisted part) has a guide in the middle of the black part and put in the same side the red line and the "V" sign, the floppy has also a slot that fits perfectly to that guide, so the guide makes it impossible to put the connector backwards.

In my friend's connector there was not such guide and I checked he had lined up the red line with the indicator of the pin 1, as it should be.

First try when I lined up the red line of his connector with the pin1 of my floppy, same problem, the green light of the floppy was always on.

As you can guess, I was tempted to try put it backwards, which I knew was incorrect given the red line, but hell, it worked !, so I was like, huh ?

. Back home I had to grind my connector with my dremel (a tool) in order to be able to put the connector without damaging the equipment.

What possible explanation is possible ?, I just can't understand.

About jumpers, there are two jumpers and in the last link I posted there is just one used per case.

The configuration that was by default on my old pc was :

o-o o

o-o o

now, and please Nyar correct me if I am wrong, those two cases described in the link I posted use only 1 jumper per case ?, what would be those black cirles ?, may that sounds like a dumb Q, but I just dont understand it yet.

Can those jumpers might be an explanation, why I am having problems with reading some disk that I know are in perfect conditions, since I have problems with some disk and with others the floppy reads them perfectly.

Sorry for the long post and thx in advance.

It has to be the cable. I would suggest disconnecting the power cable completely and waiting 30 seconds before flipping the cable and see what happens. Sometimes there is residual power lingering in the system and even though you powered down the system the power supply may still be giving a very low level of power to the motherboard. I have had similar problems before and it is always the cable. You have already proven that the drive works in another machine.

Yes, in thelink only one jumper is used. Most likely, if two pair of pins were shortend, it might be a default setting. On harddrives you also sometimes have more pins shortend then needed. I always remove the extra pins..

Did the reversing of the cable work for you as well ? I can't read that in your reply above ?

Thx for tip number6 I'll try that.

Nyar, sorry I forgot to tell what you ask.

As soon as my cable was grinded an it was possible to put it backwards, I put it the same way it worked in my friend's pc, it didn't work at all (not even the green light).

So I did the same thing with my old cable, the one that used be in my 486DX, and put it backwards and worked inmediately.

Note : Now that I am using my old cable, it is put backwards, I had to grind it as well, the red line is not lined up with the "V" sign.

And as I said before, I am having a problem while reading some disks, and I will try number6's advice for that.

If I didn't explain well, please let me know, because I still don't know why my floppy only works when I use the cable the wrong way (based on the red line and that I had to adapt it), and for why the new cable I have don't work and only the old one.

I hope I've expressed myself clear.

Thx in advance.

If you connected the cable correctly on the motherboard and used the right connector on the floppy cable, then I'm clueless.

As far as the reading of floppies goes, you already stated, it's an old floppy drive. It could be that it's currently showing minor defects. You might want to consider buying a new floppy drive, as they aren't that expensive..

The problem is fixed, however I don't know why the connector only worked the wrong way. The important part is that now I use my floppy and I am ready to format my pc.

Thx Nyar, Gob and number6.
