Patriot Act anyone? Of for Canadians, you can get a look at the legislature that came just after 9/11. Many new ways to emprison people, one even without trial or official reason (and they're still effective).

Makes me think of our Patriot Act as well. By the way, I thank the Canadian government (not at all) for bowing to US pressure shortly after 9/11 and deciding to no longer grant Americans "Refugee Status".

Thanks for mentioning those new laws in Canada though, I hadn't heard of them.

ROFL don't listen to him ordos he's talking out of his arse. There's no such legislation. Little more than regulations on airport scanners and sky marshals.

Oh, that's all? But yes...your government did decide to no longer give Americans "Refugee Status".

If you're talking about the Canadian law, I got a email from a judge working near the Supreme Canadian court showing some worry about these measures. I was studying in law at the time and we had some news directly from the source... It's in French, but maybe I still have it (edit: too hold, went garbage). ACE, you should go read these laws by yourself, as I did. Then you'll be able to talk about it.

PS: ACE, do you really believe people should only look at the opinion the believe is correct or at all opinions and decide for themselves?

I know the legislation that was put in place. I know it like the back of my hand. Ordos that has nothing to do with what you're talking about. That's not federal legislation that's a policy change by immigration.

Egeides I know exactly what post 9/11 legislation was passed through parliament. It had absolutely nothing to do with "Many new ways to emprison people, one even without trial or official reason (and they're still effective)." as you claim. What you suggest sounds like the Emergency Act (formerly the War Measures Act) and such drastic measures havn't been used since the FLQ crisis of 1970. Don't read Quebec TV's report on the legislation, read the actual legislation yourslef. It's documented well on the government's web site.

I DID read the actual legislation... Also read a judge's comment on it. If someone is declared terrorist (no judiciary proof needed, you just officially say he's terrorist), all a bunch of measures can be applied.

There ya go... Okay, it's not the juridiction with all comments from the judge (instead it's the senators here), but it gives the main lines:

http://www.opengovernmentcanada.org/News/OC110101.htm

A few passages concerning what I said:

"The committee will also express concerns about the preventive-arrest section of the bill, which allows police to arrest, detain and force suspected terrorists to answer questions before a judge, even if they haven't been charged with anything."

" Federal Information Commission John Reid has warned that the bill, as it now stands, could cripple the federal access law by giving the government an "unfettered, unreviewable right to cloak information in secrecy." "

" "If Canadians can be assured that the provisions in the legislation are temporary, they will accept them in this period of immediate response to an extraordinary threat," the organization, representing Canada's lawyers, said in its submission." [in other words, it wasn't assured to be temporary]

No demacracy is strong enough to last for ever... If it does that means stagnation and that eventually means death.

USA today is like the Roman empire: hated and respected by a whole bunch of nations. Others just became 'clients'. Rome was a republic as well and it eventually became an empire. I think that what is happening right now is the beggining of the end for the U democracy.
