The makeup of an army should reflect its origin.

eg. The Fremen come from a desert and should have that reflected in their characteristics which they do.

Harkonnen should reflect the fact that they come from a factory world and do with their heavy armour.

However the Atreides come from a ocean world but do not reflect this in their units. No hovercraft etc.

I'm not greatly impressed by the preponderance of walking machines either which are downright glacial when your trying to out-flank anything.

Actually, Atreides come from a planet much like earth. So it really does reflect on the units, the planet is colorful, the units are colorful and resist of a mix of powers. Just like Caladan, having rivers and grass (A mix). :)

I think that the ATR are reflected by their world. Like bry said its just like earth, and the ATR are smart, and got some real fast units. Also the color of their uniform matches it(witch is a light brown looking). Just thought i would put in my input ::)

Earth is about 2 thirds water, If you look at the maps of Caladan in the House novels it appears to be over 80% water and has few strategically important sites inland. Indeed the action on Caladan specifically mentions projections of large warships.

i agree, the Atreides colors mostly suck

the default Blue for Vehicles is pretty good, but the horribly-ugly brown infantry that look like "walking sticks of crap" is a very very poor choice of color. they are basing the horrible Atreides colors off of the movie, so blame David Lynch for assaulting your eyes

of course, Atreides light infantry are pretty much always-useless pieces of walking crap anyways, so it's actually a benefit to the gameplay that their visual obscenity makes you not wanna build them ;D

"On Caladan, we ruled by air and sea power"

The Atreides were supposed to have a brilliant airforce - hence the ornithopters in D2k; this has not continued very well in Emp.

Snipers and Kindjal make sense on a archipelagic world, though.
