Nyarlathotep Posted November 23, 2001 Author Posted November 23, 2001 Came across a program that seems to stop Windows from crashing. You can use it for Windows 95/98/NT/2000:http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10106-100-6562118.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-3.lst-7-9.6562118It seems to help...Nyar...
Guest rees Posted November 23, 2001 Posted November 23, 2001 Thanks Nyar. I will try AntiCrash Pro. I don't understand why EBFD is the only game that's doing this on my system. Your input about EBFD not crashing under DirectX 8.1 is helpful. I have tried just about everything: - Reinstalling DirectX 8.1 (Thanks Microslop for not allowing installation of older versions!) - Updating / reinstalling sound and video drivers - Removing ALL background programs using msconfig - Reading all USELESS FAQs on WW's tech support site - Turning off DMA for my CD-ROM drives (knew this wouldn't work since I could install successfully with it on. - Uninstalling Logitech Wingman software.I do not want to reformat my HD and start again for just one game. This is the only game that is misbehaving on my system. Hmmm, maybe it's the game???Again, Nyar, thanks for your help.I was wondering, is WW tech support just servers that send automatic responses? They just sent me another "SOLVED" response by pointing me at the crash during install FAQ that I read long before contacting them. I could install before something changed on my system so that FAQ doesn't apply. I told tech support that fact a couple of responses before this inane response.- Rees
Guest rees Posted November 23, 2001 Posted November 23, 2001 Update on my trials and tribulations:Tried AntiCrash - did nothing.Updated Via & AMD drivers - did nothing.Tried INSTFIX10 - Kept asking for "CD labeled ." after all files were copied. I followed the instructions carefully. So needless to say, I couldn't install using that method.I always crash to the desktop after 100% of the files are coped. It crashes when "registering" appears. The exception is when I used the INSTFIX method - then I couldn't finish the installation. My CD-ROM drives (Toshiba XM-6702B & Plextor 2410A) have no problem reading Safedisk2 protected discs.Something very sinister is going on here...-Rees
Guest ipzorj Posted November 24, 2001 Posted November 24, 2001 What's ur suggestion ?Ive downloaded the most recents drivers for all components, last directX (8.1), etc ...I dont see what i can do more !Thx for ur help.
Guest Radar Posted November 24, 2001 Posted November 24, 2001 It came to my concerns....why doesn`t WW make a patch that fixes these problems?I mean, it would take them what, a week? They made the game themselves and they should have no problem with fixing these errors.
Guest rees Posted November 24, 2001 Posted November 24, 2001 WW finally responded with a "human" response instead of the "here's the FAQs" automated response. I'll wait and see what they say. Bottom line, this is a fun game but appears to be relatively unstable. I hope Westwood didn't make unwise design decisions to use undocumented directx features. Those sort of shortcuts can create major compatibility issues.ipzorj's hardware is similar to mine: Abit KG7, 512MB DDR RAM, Geforce, Creative Labs sound, similar HD (I've got a 40GB Western Digital with much free space.), Athlon... ipzorj is also using DirectX 8.1. But that's where the similarity ends. I'm not using Win2k because I think it's overkill for my use. However, for stability reasons, it's a much better choice than 98.Nyar, since you were able to install Directx 8.1 and successfully ran the game, I'm inclined to believe an interaction is occuring here - Detonator video drivers and DirectX 8.1??Just for grins, I installed Alice - no problem, ran just fine.
Nyarlathotep Posted November 24, 2001 Author Posted November 24, 2001 Rees, I have different specs compared to yours:Intel Pentium PIII 1000MhzAsus CUSL2-C 133Mhz mainboard512mb SDRAM (133Mhz)Asus V8200 GeForce 3 (running driver version 4.13.01.1260 from Asus' site)IBM 10 gig hd (5400rpm)Maxtor 30gig hd (7200Rpm)Windows MEI've played EBFD on several systems and on all systems it ran fine from out of the box.Believe me, I make my comp go through a lot of things and I never (knocks on wood) had any major problem. So from my point of view, I would say EBFD is pretty stable. Of course I know better, hence the fact I started this thread :DLet me know what tech support says !Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted November 24, 2001 Author Posted November 24, 2001 Radar, did you had any luck with WW tech support ?Nyar...

Guest Duncan J Posted November 26, 2001 Posted November 26, 2001 Anyone know how to get Westwood tech support to respond, they just send a FAQ as a response. My computer locks-up when the Campaign Video first starts to play. I can at least play the Skirmishes. I have changed video/audio hardware acceleration and remove all back ground running programs except systray and explorer.
Guest Duncan J Posted November 26, 2001 Posted November 26, 2001 Update: Found out I can get through the Campaign videos and actually play the game if I disable my sound card. (So I play without sound)It is an Advance AC'97 Audio built into my ASUS P4T-E mother board, Any-one else seen this problem?
Nyarlathotep Posted November 26, 2001 Author Posted November 26, 2001 Duncan, if you receive an auto reply from WW tech support, reply on it, stating that it didn't solve your problem. A real person will get working on your problem.Problems with soundcards have been seen before. A question I need to ask, have you upgraded all your drivers (also for the BIOS)?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted November 26, 2001 Author Posted November 26, 2001 ipzorj, if it's only multiplayer that freezes, doesn't necessary mean that your system or the game is the cause. Lot's of EBFD users are running Windows 2000 and do not have a problem. Overall I believe the game freezing has to do with glitches in the system itself. It could be a driver issue (like the Voodoo 3 1.07 driver doesn't work, while the 1.04 does), or bad hardware (faulty memory) or even cooling (videocards that get over heated). Yes, sometimes it might be really a fault in the game, but I've seen it rarely.btw, did you reply to the automated msg from ww tech support, stating that it didn't solve your problem ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted November 26, 2001 Author Posted November 26, 2001 Rees, what's your status ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted November 26, 2001 Author Posted November 26, 2001 Chris, if you read this, could you please give a response in regards to DirectX 8.1 ? Does WW know of any issues with DirectX 8.1 and EBFD not running (although it seems to run with Windows ME though) ?Thanks in advance for the reply.Nyar...
Guest rees Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 No response from WW tech support yet. However, I've reformatted and performed a clean Windows98SE install. I installed Directx 8.0a, IE5.5 and critical W98SE updates.I've also installed the following apps:1) Office97 SR-2b2) Pagemaker 6.53) CorelDRAW 74) Paperport 6.15) Nero 5.5.1.16) CloneCD 3.2.1.17) Norton SystemWorks 20018) SBLive Ware 39) EnterNET 300 (for my DSL)And EBFD won't install, crashes to desktop after 100% of files have been copied. Same symptom as with DirectX 8.1. Now I don't think this has anything to do with DirectX 8.1. Bummer...Bet you it's an interaction with something above, but what? I don't want to uninstall each app yet, took me 3 hours to install everything.Arrrgggghhh!
