Guest WS_ChrisL Posted October 26, 2001 Posted October 26, 2001 Yes, many thanks to Nyarlathotep!!! Yeah! He has collected many many gems of configuration wisdom in this monstrous thread!I stopped by to post a link to http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 which has (I belive to be the latest) Via 4-in-1 drivers, if need-be. There is also an install instruction page to show everyone how easy it is to upgrade.Have fun everyone!--Chris
Guest rajzor Posted October 26, 2001 Posted October 26, 2001 Well, I still wish I could have as much fun as anyone, but it is still crashing. But do you really think the blue screen crash mentioned something important? And isn't VxD the virtual device driver, or was the OE more important. Please tell me why. I'd always like to know more of the background.I can say that I probably was not 'trying' to connect to the internet, because i'm always online (LAN, university network in student flats). Finally I won't be trying for now to solve as I'm staying at my parents house now. I'll be back on sunday... Cya!!
Nyarlathotep Posted October 27, 2001 Author Posted October 27, 2001 Thanks Chris for the supporting words !!Number6, you are right, the problems rajzor is facing are difficult to resolve.rajzor, the following might sound overdone, but I would consider cleaning the harddisk, and re-installing all again. I do not know if the blue screen thingie is part of the problem with EBFD, but personally when I get one of those (haven't had one in 2 years), I always format the harddrive and re-install windows. As you have ME, it might be good that once you've got a clean machine again with updated drivers, to make a "System restore" point. This way (if all goes well, cause it's Windows :) ) it's easy to get back to a point where all was running fine.I'm also running ME and I have to admit that all is running very stable !Let me know what you think, otherwise I'll dig into your prob deeper.Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted October 27, 2001 Author Posted October 27, 2001 I missed a question of yours:"13. Nyar, where does your name come from. Is it some Egyptian priest.....?"Nyarlathotep is the name of the God of a thousand different incarnations. It's a name I read somewhere and I never saw it before, so that's why I choose it. My nationality is Dutch by the way :)Nyar...
Guest CheezX Posted October 27, 2001 Posted October 27, 2001 WOW, I was gone for a few days and now PAGE 19!!!!!!Anyways, I got Red Alert 2 to work on XP to some people's disbelief. I heard on the message boards that people get installation freezes in RA2 but mine installed and works just fine. Also, Emperor is still messed up and I am still waiting for those Sound Blaster Live! XP drivers. Arg! on the site it say "Mid to Late October", now its Oct 27, they have 4 more days to release it and they sure are taking their time. But, in the meanwhile, I'll be playing RA2 and keep messing around with Emperor and see if I get lucky!ps-I emailed Leadtek(company of my Geforce2) about their nonhelpful drivers download page, and they said they ae working on it and to download the detonator XP drivers in the time being. I guess I gotta wait for them also!
number6 Posted October 28, 2001 Posted October 28, 2001 Hemp, Do you have a hardware/software firewall between your comp and the internet. If the port can't be opened it sounds like you have it blocked somehow. Maybe XP has some network protection built into it. Since I don't have XP I am not sure.
Guest kyle3165 Posted October 28, 2001 Posted October 28, 2001 here is my easy info. My game locks up after one or two campain missions. I mean lock up meaning it boots me back to the desttop. Nyarlathotep Posted October 28, 2001 Author Posted October 28, 2001 kyle, did you try the suggestions made here ? This way they'll be informed that there's still an issue.Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted October 28, 2001 Author Posted October 28, 2001 Kyle, do you encounter any other problems with other applications or games ? The problem you have with EBFD, seems like a memoy prob to me. This due to the fact that your able to play 2 missions and then it puts you back to desktop. Suggestion:You have 512mb of RAM. I think this is 2x 256mb ? If so, try removing one DIMM and run the game then and see if it helped. If not, try removing the other and then run the game.Another question, in what resolution are you running the game ? I see your deskrop resolution is 800x600. Make sure you do not run the game in any higher resolution then 800x600.[edit: I asume you end the programs you had runnng when creating the e-report !]Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 10-28-2001).]

Nyarlathotep Posted October 29, 2001 Author Posted October 29, 2001 You can always refer them to this thread and let them read how many probs you've had :)I've always hated the onboard stuff, that's why I started to build my own comps. The chipset you've mentioned is not from Asus, so you won't find it on their site. The cipset you have on your mainboard belongs to VIA, so best thing you can do is grab the lates drivers from their site. For audio drivers you need:ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/asus/misc/audio/viawinx.zipThe VIA 4in1 driver (4.32):ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/asus/misc/utils/4in1432v.zipAny other driver you might need for your Asus motherboard:http://www.asus.com/products/motherboard/driver.htmlI sure hope it helps !!btw, I'm from Heerhugowaard (near Alkmaar) 8)Nyar...
Guest Impz0r Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Dude i have a voodoo 3 like that one guy on page 18...similar problems occure aswell...I have all my drivers.....i try that -C thing and it turns the file into a messed up winamp file that i have to ctr+alt+del to get rid of.Not sure if im doing it correct i see a lil mini picture icon with the name = EMPEROR.EXESo i go into it and edit text to= EMPEROR.EXE -C......iv tryed numerous combinations and it does that same thing=not workAnd that just turns it into some ghetto winamp file that spats and sputters till i ctrl+alt+del it out.hrmm ill try to play the game after i edit the file name...am i not suposed to be able to enter Dune after i edit that text..well seeAm i even doing that correct?
Guest rajzor Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Impz0r, what you did was only edit the name of the file. What you should do is:- right click on the emperor icon- click on properties- where it says target and something like C:WestwoodEmperorEMPEROR.EXE ...there you must type the"-c" so the target line becomes:C:WestwoodEmperorEMPEROR.EXE -cOkay??
Guest Impz0r Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Ok fiddled around for awhile before i came back here...i noticed someone talk of short cuts and i saw a "create shortcut" when i right clicked "EMPEROR.EXE"...so i made a shortcut then i just named the file "short cut to EMPEROR.EXE and i added the -C at the end.Game ran better got thru a mission or 2. Then I got some fun mission where i had to fend of Zergling hordes of contamintators and leechs as well as a bunch of ordos cobras. So i ended up making about 20 minos..hords of kindjal, 6 harvs and carys,15 sonic fremen 30 freman warriors,6 repair things,5 engineers, 10 mongeese...and about prolly 20 other misc units.Game usualy crashs before i get that much stuff. It still did crash tho after i made 6 air drones and sent them to the other end of the board to take out his harv caryalls. Mayhaps its just that i got lucky it didnt crap out...i know it almost did a few times...kindof a lil studderI just read what you said...when i rightclick the regular EMPEROR.EXE it doesnt give me that target option...when i right click "shortcut to EMPEROR.EXE" i get the target option so i made it "C:WestwoodEmperorEMPEROR.EXE -C"I get it right?Thxs for being so helpfull
Nyarlathotep Posted October 29, 2001 Author Posted October 29, 2001 It seems you're getting the hang of it :)Did you run the game with the edited shortcut ? If not, please do so and let us know if it helped. If it doesn't help, make sure you have the 1.04 drivers for your Voodoo card.Nyar...
Guest rajzor Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Well, I´m back. And I´ll continue trying.kyle3165, your prob seems VERY familiar. I havethe same prob, 1but I don´t have a solution yet. I also had the to-desktop-jump after (about) two or three single campaign missions. Skirmish single has worked fine, but internet multiplayer is worse.Number6, thanks for your research!! I will try to search the registry for symantec. I did indeed have its virus scanner installed before, but not anymore. I´ll simply backup my registry and delete all occurrences of the name symantec and we´ll see....Nyar thanks for some personal information. I am intrigued by Egyptian history, so that´s why I asked. And I am from the Netherlands also, Wageningen more specifically. The last time I reinstalled WinME, I soon installed EBFD after that, but I still had the probs. It might even have been the case that this problem made me reinstall WinME. Because one time, after a crash, don´t remember if was a full crash or only to the desktop, butafter reboot my sound was gone. The pc did not detect my soundcard anymore. I tried things for days but it didn´t help so I reinstalled WinME. I thought about removing the soundcard, but it´s onboard. Even after reinstall it didn´t detect the card, so I eventually called HP helpdesk. They simply told me to go to BIOS, load default settings and save, and it worked!!! So that means some kind of software (maybe EBFD) changed my BIOS settings!!! What I do need to say is that there aren´t as many settings as in ´normal´ BIOS, and I haven´t even found one by which you can change something about sound. Grrrrrr!!!I have an Asustek VIA KT133 based Mainboard System Controller. I took a look inside, and it said, VT82C686B, but that´s a type I wasn´t able to find on the asus.com site. Maybe it´s especially made for HP and others, and they don´t want you to mess with it?? I think the specifications are also in the EA file. That´s it for now. I´ll update as soon as possible.
Guest rajzor Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 ****, had another weird crash. In hte ´issue attack orders´ screen my first bootscreen suddenly appeared which is the ´HP invent´ screen. And of course the sound is gone too. But that will be solved after yet another load BIOS defaults,...getting very tired.People at internet missions I try to join, must now my name by now as ´the quitter´....

Guest rajzor Posted October 30, 2001 Posted October 30, 2001 Well, tried some more thingies...1. Took out my modem, which I don´t use2. Disabled DMA on DVD3. Tried to reinstall on other CD drive (cd writer)And at number 3 I noticed a maybe very helpful thing: during install the program also minimized to desktop, no crash, and install kept on going.... Getting very very tired now!!!!!!! Let those Westwood people please do something about my very persisting problem. I´ll contact em again now.
number6 Posted October 30, 2001 Posted October 30, 2001 rajzor, You said :"3. Tried to reinstall on other CD drive (cd writer)And at number 3 I noticed a maybe very helpful thing: during install the program also minimized to desktop, no crash, and install kept on going.... "Has the install program always crashed on you? Have you ever successfully installed the game? I thought all of your crashes were after a successful install and you were trying to run the game.
Guest rajzor Posted October 30, 2001 Posted October 30, 2001 number 6, you are right. I did install it before, several times, and I´ve played, or tried to play hundreds of times. You can read about my adventure up into page 18. I simply tried something I had not tried before, which is install on the other CD drive. And when the 'to desktop jump' even happened during install, I remembered that that happened before. I think now that I do have some hardware problem, but as you can see in my previous posts, I tried (almost) every thing possible.
Guest rajzor Posted October 30, 2001 Posted October 30, 2001 By the way, and as I said before, it´s not a real crash. It only jumps to the desktop. After that I simply press the taskbar to return to the install process, in which I can see it has progressed while I was at the desktop.
