YEP! Microsoft has finally made a great product! XP has fixed my exit to desktop problem that many people have. I guess XP fixes the conflict between VIA and Soundblaster Live! Its just that my graphics are pretty messed up as you can see on the link I gave on the previous message with a screenshot. I just updated my video drivers to v21.83 which is the microsoft-certified one. But, I still have that messy screen.

O yea, I'm not sure if XP REALLY solved the exit desktop problem since many people say its the conflict of VIA chipset and Soundblaster Live! and I haven't installed the Live drivers yet since creative hasnt released XP drivers. I'm thinking that maybe since my computer doesn't know I have a Live card and the drivers, that it doesnt interfere with the chipset. I'll keep you posted when creative releases XP drivers!

ps-XP is great, so stable and colorful!

I looked at the screenshot, but it hasn't got anything I can recognize from the game. It's pretty weird. Did you try to use the drivers that came with Windows XP, instead of the new drivers ?

About half the time I go into a multiplayer game, it freezes while loading. The music begins to play like a broken record. I'll post my dxdiag stuff for you, tell me if I need anything else.

Thanks

I desperately need a response, I cannot play the game right now unless I can fix this lockup

Posted

Have not posted here in a while and thought I would comment on Ichwan Bedwine's problem. This is the list of tasks you had running when you ran your easy report:

----Task List-----------------------------------------------

msgsrv32.exe

spool32.exe

mprexe.exe

mstask.exe

mmtask.tsk

Explorer

taskmon.exe

Systray

Audio Headquarters

ctsysvol.exe

navapw32.exe

poproxy.exe

winampa.exe

RealPlayer

aoltray.exe

wmiexe.exe

waol.exe

rnaapp.exe

tapisrv.exe

ddhelp.exe

ez.exe

------------------------------------------------------------

I have a couple of questions. First, do you have all of these tasks running when you play online/solo? If so, does the sound stutter in solo play as well? Second, do you have any kind of broadband internet access that may go through a router?

The only reason I am concerned about the background tasks you have running is because a few of them are possibly all accessing your sound card(RealPlayer,winampa.exe,ctsysvol.exe

Audio Headquarters

). This could cause intermitent hardware problems causing the game to crash. This sorta blends in with my second question about your internet connection. If you are using a network adapter to connect to a cable/DSL modem there could be a device conflict that only occurs when you play online. These are all hunches, but you could easily test whether the tasks are causing the problem by temporarliy disabling them using the "msconfig" application. I would recommend disabling all of the stuff in your Systray except :Explorer,Systray,navapw32.exe,

poproxy.exe,aoltray.exe,wmiexe.exe,waol.exe,

rnaapp.exe,tapisrv.exe

I am not sure what some of these do that's why I listed them (I know you need explorer and systray running). Well that's all I have.

Sorry I haven't responded. What you have suggested is working out just fine, I probably won't need any more help. Thank you so very, very much-constatnt reboots and freeze ups were killing my computer

Thanks ! It's always good to see people benifit from the suggestions made here.

And that's just here... My mailbox is getting overloaded as well with help requests :)

btw, for all the new people reading this thread, on page 14 is a summary of what's been suggested till then... 8)

Thanks again Number6 ! But remember, it's not just me, but also people like you and all the others who participated who make this thread work !

HI AGAIN!

I did some further testing with XP. My screen is still messed up but when I try using Win98/ME or Win95 compatibility mode, I get the exit to desktop problem again. This doesnt happen when I choose no compatibility or Win2000 or NT, I get the same weird screen.

So, I guess that the exit to desktop thing is ONLY applied to Win9x. I think this should help some people!

Posted

As no one has replied anymore, hre's again a summary of all the suggestions and solutions that worked for people.

This way you don't need to go through all the posts again

****

If the game freezes, or turns black, try the following (Don't know if it'll work, but if so, it's your video card which is causing the problem):

Win 98, right click on the desktop and select proporties. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.

Click the Adapter tab. Use the Refresh Rate box on the Adapter tab to manually

reset the video refresh rate for your monitor. To do this, follow these steps:

On the Adapter tab, click Adapter Default in the Refresh Rate box.

Click OK. If you are prompted to test the setting, click OK.

If the setting appears to function properly, click Yes.

If the setting does not function properly, click No.

If the above doesn't work, follow below:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.

Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting). Click OK, and then click Close.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

****

If the game locks up when you start it, try to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, follow these steps:

Restart the computer.

Insert the CD-ROM for the game. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program from starting automatically.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER

cd-rom:setupdirectxdxsetup.exe

where cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

Click to clear the Direct3D Hardware Acceleration Enabled check box.

Click OK.

****

Verify that the correct version of the Ddraw.dll file is installed, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

In the Named box, type ddraw.dll.

In the Look In box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.

In the list of found files, verify that the Ddraw.dll file is installed in the WindowsSystem folder, and then rename any copies of the Ddraw.dll file that are not in the WindowsSystem folder. (make it something that you can remember easily, so when it doesn't do you any good, or when something else stops working, you're able to change it back !)

****

SBLive! users !!

If the game stops responding, try the following (make sure you've updated Liveware! to the latest version !):

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Multimedia.

On the Audio tab, click Advanced Properties under Playback.

On the Performance tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left. Click OK, and then click OK again

Close Control panel.

****

When using the "Hardware Acceleration slider", try different positions on the bar, probably a light slide to the left already might work...

Another thing, which I know it's been posted before, but here goes again: Try to reduce CD-ROM caching and prevent read-ahead activity:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click System.

On the Performance tab, click File System.

On the CD-ROM tab, note the current settings, and then move the Supplemental cache size slider to the Small position.

In the Optimize access pattern for box, click No read-ahead.

Click OK, and then click Close.

When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

If these steps do not successfully resolve the issue, repeat the steps to restore the settings to the original values noted in step 4, and then proceed to the next method.

Voodoo 3 users, try the 1.04 drivers. As addition, try using the drivers with the option -c and/or +w

behind the short cut. Here's a link where you can download the drivers: http://www.gamers-ammo.com/v3.html

****

The options that you can put behind the shortcut:

- you can add "+w" (without the quotes) to the Target line in the game's shortcut. This will force the game to preload each movie into memory before playing.

- If you have a Voodoo card, you may experience display problems due to texture compression. To disable the texture compression, you will need to add "-C" (without the quotes) to the Target line in the game's shortcut.

- If you are running two video cards, the game may choose the video card you do not wish to use. You can force it to use your alternate card by adding "-ALTVID" (without the quotes) to the Target line in the game's shortcut.

- Also try the +v option. Still not sure what is does, but it helped out some before..

***

Make sure that the GeForce card is not sharing IRQ with any other device, except for 'IRQ Holder for PCI Steering' (Right click on “my computer” on desktop and select “properties” Go to device manager and select “settings” Here you can view IRQ resources for all devices).

****

Check if you have screensaver enabled. If so, disable it.

****

Try setting the Video BIOS shadowing option to disabled (in the BIOS).

****

Try setting your desktop colours to 256.

****

If you are using a non-Intel chipset based motherboard, make sure you download and install the very latest AGP drivers from your chipset manufacturer's website.

****

Try turning off V-SYNC in the NVIDIA control panel

****

If you're overclocking your system (or GeForce), try putting it back to default.

****

Try assigning a IRQ to your VGA in the BIOS.

****

Try the following settings in the BIOS:

- Video BIOS Shadow - Disabled

- Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled

- C8000 - xxxxx Shadow - Disabled

- Peer Concurrency - Enabled

- Concurrent PCI Host - Enabled

- PCI Streaming - Enabled

- VGA Palette Snoop - Disabled

****

Try installing the Intel chipset drivers from:

<http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm> for all versions of Windows 9x.

****

If you have an 'AGP Driving Control' setting in your BIOS, try switching it to 'BA' or another value instead of 'Auto'.

****

Check the AGP4X setting in the BIOS (If it's there that is).

****

Disable non-essential add-in devices except video one at a time in Device Manager. For example:

- Network card

- Sound card

- TV card

- Scanner interface

See if lock up behavior is resolved. If not, physically remove the add-in cards and run the game again. Once you get a stable platform, start re-installing/re-enabling devices

****

All users with AMD chipset based motherboards should also install AMD's latest AGP Miniport Driver. You can get it at the following webpage:

<http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/bin/>

****

Make sure that there is adequate cooling for your GeForce, your AGP chipset and your processor. You can see if overheating is the problem by leaving your case lid off and using a desk fan to blow inside the case.

****

Try disabling Advanced Power Management in the System Control Panel.

****

Try switching on AGP Turbo in your BIOS, turning up the Front Side Bus speed slightly, or setting your AGP ratio to 1:1 (in that order).

****

Try going into the System Control Panel, Device Manager, System Devices, Direct Memory Access Controller, and changing the Access Restrictions (on the Settings Tab) to restrict DMA transfers to memory below 16MB.

****

Things to experiment with:

- AGP aperture size (keep it above 16 as setting it at or below 16 will disable AGP)

- AGP 2x/4X mode

- Be sure card is on IRQ 11 and no other devices share same IRQ

- Be sure you have Via 4 in 1 driver ver 4.25 or later (If Via chipset)

- Be sure you have latest Ali AGP driver (if Ali chipset)

- Try the card in a different system if possible

- Reformat if you’ve had other video cards in system before

****

A post from a user:

http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/Forum10/HTML/003139-2.html

Check out what bjergand's message. He has in AGP Aperature @ 256 and no Video Shadow in BIOS configuration either. Game settings are Shadows off, 1024x768 @32bit, and all other settings at maximum.

So I decided to try his setup, and it fixed the lockup for me. Recall that the game completely locked on me before at any AGP Aperature setting above 16meg.

(Thanks Jeromeku !)

Taken from Soundblaster.com:

"Q7. Where can I download Creative's Windows 2000 drivers for my Sound Blaster Live!?

Windows 2000 support for the Sound Blaster Live! is now available through :

Live!Ware 3.0 for Windows 2000 ( includes core applications & driver )".

So if if you've downloaded and installed Liveware 3.0 for Win200, you have the latest SBLive! drivers.

Voodoo 5 users:

please use these modified 3dfx drivers:

http://www.gamers-ammo.com/3DFX/MODS/Vs-w2k-1.04.00-rv1.zip

It will solve the startup screen and movies in emperor on a voodoo5 5500 AGP

(Thanks Ridge71).

****

Here's what I did to get the game working:

1. I disabled maintenance manager, shutdown all running programs, and turned off all background tasks except systray and explorer.

2. I disabled screen savers, virus protection and set my energy saving features to always on (no system stand-by, no blank screens, hard drives always up).

3. In my BIOS, I also got rid of virus protection, palette snooping, video ROM BIOS shadowing and video ROM caching. I have my AGP aperture set to 64megs.

4. In my Win98 settings, my desktop runs at 800x600x16. In the game, I run 1280x768x32. I have hardware acceleration set to full for video and sound. My CD-ROM is set for maximum caching. Windows manages my virtual memory settings.

5. In the game's video settings, I run shadows low, detail, modeling and everything else at medium settings. In the hardware options I have multi-texturing enabled. Sometimes I disable multi-texturing but I don't see any difference.

6. On the command line I use the +w and -c options for texture compression and movie playback.

(Thanks Spiderlee !).

I´ve been having BIG problems too:

1. The game sometimes jumps to desktop after which I can play on.

2. The game crashes and: a blue screen appears and only reboot is possible or it stops and only pressing crtl-alt-del several times gives a reboot.

3. And in some instances even my sound is gone after reboot. Resetting my BIOS defaults returns my sound.

I have tried all suggestions given on the support site, like updating motherboard drivers and directx, reinstalling and deleting all registry keys, but nothing has helped so far. Please help.

Just to try, I did close all the programs that CAN be closed with ctrl-alt-del, except systray and explorer, but that didn´t help. Isn´t it normal to have those progs in the loaded area? I will give u the link in where u can see the program and its function:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph06450.html

It is support for the UK pc though I have the dutch (nl) version, but items are the same.

Another problem that could have something to do with the game crashing, closing out of itself or in particular crashing to the desktop, is that sometimes a window that i type in becomes the not-active one. I mean that the title bar becomes grey and the things I type don´t appear anymore. I suppose another program becomes active, but I don´t know which one. Maybe it is the keyboard program because when yhe Windows Networking login window appears and I wait too long (5 sec) it also becomes grey (inactive). When I press alt-tab, I see the login window icon AND a keyboard icon.

For now I´ll be available for the next 12h and I´ll be trying some or all of the options on the very long list u provided so generously. I understand u, nyar, r not part of westwood? Maybe we can communicate in a quicker way through ICQ or MSN messenger.

I do like to say that I have NEVER had so many problems running a game smoothly!!! I don´t quit too quickly, but I have already been working on the problem for days!!

Posted

rajzor,

Just because it appears the tasks are not running anymore in the "Close Program" window, that does not necessarilly mean that the app has closed down completely. To ensure that none of your background processes are causing the problem. I suggest you use the "msconfig" application to disable all of these programs in the start tab. Killing processes after they have started is always an error prone activity. Since you already killed everything but explorer and Systray, go ahead and uncheck all of the startup processes except "Systray" in the msconfig app and then reboot when prompted. After you reboot check to see that none of the processes are running except Systray and explorer. If the problem goes away I suggest you enable one app at a time in the startup tab and reboot until the problem returns. Once the problem returns make note of the application you enabled and post that info here on this thread if you want more help. If the problem does not go away when you disabled all of the tasks, then you have truly eliminated the background processes (since the problem persists without any of them ever being run on your system). Hope this helps.

Thanks for replying again, Nyar.

I´ll try your suggestions in a moment, but what u say implies that none of these startup progs are REALLY necessary?

I have already been trying some things. Like disabling that keyboard feature, but no use. I did just finish a 2 hour lasting skirmish game without any problems at the highest graphical settings. I thing the game only crashes when I´m in a dialog or chat screen. So multiplayer is impossible. Single mission I need to try.

And another occurring problem after all these resets and stuff is that I see almost double size fonts in internet explorere now. Any solution for that??

Thank you very much!!!

okay, did some testing again...

1. IE has normal sized text again

2. no more programs running in background, only systray and explorer: super availability of system resources (did nothing)

2a. programs running after desktop crash when dune is also still running: systray, explorer, Dune, Emperor and some windows/temp film called ef7194.tmp

3. played single campaign, movies run super, crash only happens when choosing battlefield or right after the scoring stats of the previous mission. Crash means sudden desktop appearance, but no lockup. I can simply restart Emperor.

4. -c , +v, +w or -ALTVID (no use)

5. brought hardware acceleration to zero (no use)

5a. only 1 version of ddraw.dll is found

6. conclusion: it seems like dune only crashes when in some kind of dialog, not during the game, which is in some way satisfying...

7. westwood has not yet replied to my error report, sent yesterday about this time, but we´ll be waiting.

8. next solving methods:

9. re-update drivers for motherboard and video card

10. Try to reduce CD-ROM caching and prevent read-ahead activity

11.disable Direct3D hardware acceleration

12. maybe reinstall dune with other cd drive as it´s now on DVD, then on CDR drive

13. Nyar, where does your name come from. Is it some Egyptian priest.....?

Well... I endured a 3 hour HD defrag. Reinstalled the VIA 4in1 driver, reinstalled my old nvidia driver (4.12.01.0758). This means that it detects 2 monitors again. The existing one (HP mx70) and a standard monitor, which isn´t there and has never been there. I got rid of this monitor by installing the detonatorXP driver a week ago.

This ´2nd monitor´ gave me the reason to apply the "-ALTVID" option again. Result: I finished an online skirmish game... I don´t know why but there seems to be some improvement ;). But I still need to see how long it lasts.

Last remark for now: my nvidia card shares IRQ 11 with 2 devices:

1. ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ-...

2. SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus

My Crystal WDM Audio Codec shares IRQ 10 with 3 devices:

1. ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ-...

2. ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ-...

3. HSP56 WDM DEVICE

Is it okay that they share with so many devices? And secondly is it okay that the audio codec shares with 2 the same devices? Probably yes, because they both (audio en modem) need one of those pci things?

Oh, and when last crashed today, the blue screen said: Exception OE at 0028:C0030600 in VxD. Maybe this VxD reminds you of something?? To me it doesn´t...

Where would I be without the help of number6 :)

Rajzor,

When you received the blue screen with "exception OE has occurred at", where you trying to connect to the Internet ? That might explain why.

About the IRQ sharing: as stated in the summary on page 18 "Make sure that the GeForce card is not sharing IRQ with any other device, except for 'IRQ Holder for PCI Steering"

Let us know how things are now, as you stated that they did improve or if the problem still persists.

I believe the "Exception 0E .." is referring to a hex number telling you what type of exception occurred. In this case the decimal number would be 14. Don't know what that number signifies, you need a Win32 programming reference book for that. I am sorry that your problem is so severe. It seems that you have a serious hardware problem on your system. It's probably something with your motherboard/CPU/Graphics card. These problems are very hard to track down, especially over the internet and Nyar has been very successful in helping with complex problems like this. I personally don't have his patience. I try and help when I see something I think is obvious (to me anyway). Do you play any other 3D accelerated games on your system with no problems? What is the brand of your motherboard? Is your CPU overclocked? I am sort of intrigued by your problem.
