just posting to keep this topic up!

Where's all da help?

I know Emperor is losing popularity(which all games do except StarCraft) but I still wanna play it. Nyar, we need you!

WingedOne, the reply you got from WW is a standard one, cause not everyone is putting some effort in solving their prob. On the reply you've got, reply back sating that what they sugested didn't work. They'll then come back to you and work on your prob.

[Edit: changing the mouse might be worth a try to see if it helps (if you can)...]

CheezX, did you try without the new ram you bought from DELL ?

Also, at this stage, I would contact WW tech support (click support on the right top, then click answers, then "ask a question").

I hardly believe it's due to the VIA and SBLive! issue. The new VIA drivers should fix that prob, so I think it has to be something else.

Don't give up, we'll be here (again) :D

Hi MooKy,

Yes, I'm still watching my thread :)

First thing I would advise you is to go over the suggestions in this thread. On page 14 you'll find a summary of what's been suggested till then.

Looking at your specs, I would say the prob might be due to the Voodoo card. Try to do the following:

1) Try the option -c or +w behind the shortcut (you can find it also in the readme.txt).

2) If the above doesn't help, download the 1.04 driver for the Voodoo and try the game then. If it still freezes, try again the options -c and/or +w behind the shortcut.

Keep us updated !

My lock-up issues have been solved. Unfortunately, not with my old system. My motherboard and CPU got fried and had to replace them. I got an ASUS motherboard with a 1.3 gig Athlon processor, GeForce 2 video card and am using the soundchip that was built-in to the motherboard. I suspect the problem was with my older crappy soundcard, since the latest drivers for it date from 1999.

I'm running it now with the latest VIA chipset drivers as well as the AGP miniport driver and it runs fine now.

OK! I'm back as well. I'll try contacting WW later. But, it still has the same prob(kill to desktop after WW screen). I tried out all the rams and stuff. Also, I just installed WinXP. And to my amazement, it still has the problem. I got the v1.33 VIA drivers but maybe its the soundcard because Creative still hasn't relased drivers for XP. I'll keep you posted when I get the XP drivers.

ps-XP is a great OS! So stable and colorful!

OK, i'm back!

Before I had an upgrade version of XP from my before ME, and now I did a fresh install of XP and made my partition NTFS. So, now I gotta reinstall Emperor. I hope this works and I hope I can even install it since I heard of the installation errors RA2 has. I'll keep you guys posted when I have the time(maybe this weekend).

ps-I know this is not a Emperor problem, but before when I had RA2 installed and then I upgraded to XP(so i didnt have to reinstall it), now in any mission or skirmish I play, my unit and buildings just die or some unknown reason. I mean, all my stuff dies at the same time and usually a few seconds into a game. Weird huh? I really want to get Yuri's revenge but I need to fix my RA2 before I get it. Or maybe i have to wait for an update. Anyone know?

Did you also try the 1.04 driver for the Voodoo ?? Cause you were using the 1.07 drivers (at least as far as I can tell from your output).

"Main Driver : 3dfx16v3.drv

Version : 4.12.01.0666"

I'm surprised by the way, that the options behind the shortcut didn't work. I'll dig into it a bit more to see what I can find.

MooKy, I know it's basic, but here goes anyway, make sure you close all background programms when you play the game.

To do this, hit [CTRL]+[ALT]+[Delete] and "End Task" on each task until all that is left running is: "Systray" and "Explorer". You may need to End Task on a program several times if it is not ending the first time.

As you mentioned, it's only when the screen get's crowded, so it has to be something concerning resources or with your Voodoo.

(went over your replies and saw that you might have used -w.... it should be +w though:

C:WestwoodEmperorEMPEROR.EXE +w)

About the whole XP thing, I know that there are EBFD gamers who are running Windows XP, so I don't think it should be a problem. Maybe someone who's using Windows XP could give some comment on it ?

OK, i just install Emperor and got patch 1.09 and everything works fine EXCEPT my screen is all messed up. I think this is because of my video drivers(my detonator xp driver which arent certified by microsoft). But at least I can now start Emperor as before it just exits to desktop. If you would like to see the screenshot I took, goto: http://www7.ewebcity.com/cheezx/weirdebfd.JPG

Its supposed to be the title screen where you select the missions and options and things. I guess Emperor works w/ XP. I just need newer drivers tho.

I got the game working with no lock-ups or freezes!

Thanks for all the hints and tips included in this post, they we're a big help! I figured I'd post my solutions for informational purposes.

My computer doesn't even meet the minimum system requirements, but the game runs great. Here's what I got minus the lengthy e-thing reports: Pentium2-333mhz (66mhz FSB), Intel 440BX MB, 192megs RAM, 3DFX-Voodoo3 AGP Card, v1.06 video drivers, Win98, DirectX 8.0 (file dates from 1998 to 2000), Aureal Vortex / Monster S90 sound card, ATAPI Cd-Rom 48x, EIDE/ultra DMA WD-Caviar HD. I'm also on a LAN using PCI fast ethernet cards, NAT-based internet sharing and software firewalls.

Here's what I did to get the game working:

1. I disabled maintenance manager, shutdown all running programs, and turned off all background tasks except systray and explorer.

2. I disabled screen savers, virus protection and set my energy saving features to always on (no system stand-by, no blank screens, hard drives always up).

3. In my BIOS, I also got rid of virus protection, palette snooping, video ROM BIOS shadowing and video ROM caching. I have my AGP aperture set to 64megs.

4. In my Win98 settings, my desktop runs at 800x600x16. In the game, I run 1280x768x32. I have hardware acceleration set to full for video and sound. My CD-ROM is set for maximum caching. Windows manages my virtual memory settings.

5. In the game's video settings, I run shadows low, detail, modeling and everything else at medium settings. In the hardware options I have multi-texturing enabled. Sometimes I disable multi-texturing but I don't see any difference.

6. On the command line I use the +w and -c options for texture compression and movie playback.

I'm not sure if that will help anyone, but this is how I run the game. I get a performance drop and some stuttering in a battle if I'm on a large map with lots of moving targets, but it doesn't last long and is not too much of a bother. I think that is due simply to my reluctance to overclock the processor to the 100mhz FSB (I think my system is being maxed out).

Hope that helps! Let me know if I left something out or if I was unclear on some point.

SpiderLee, thanks for the info and I hope you enjoy the game !! It's good to see people having benifit from this post :D

CheezX, I know other people are running also with Win XP, so it shouldn't be a problem. Once you've updated your videocard drivers, let us know if it improved the graphics problem.

Also, just to clear it up, you just upgraded to Win XP and you got rit of the crash to desktop/lock up ?
