I tried to run the ez.exe file but it say's

that an error is caused bij battle for dune and the program exits.

Maby i know the problem. I have a Prophet 2 Mx graphics card. I had placed an Voodoo 2 card in my computer too. But those two had a conflict so i removed the voodoo 2 card and uninstalled the software of it. But now everytime i start my computer i get an error message which says that it can't find an certain 3dfx.dll file. That's true because i removed that file. But the voodoo card is not in my computer anymore: why does the system asks for it then??

I tried everything that's been suggested so far and I'm still getting lock-ups during gameplay.

Any idea what I need to do? Do you think my only option is getting a new sound card at this point?

Here's the Easy_EA text file for my system.

Nyar I got my problem fixed. Turned out it was just some bad RAM, I bought some new stuff and removed the old one and the game works fine now. Doesn't even slow down on the final level at 1600x1200. :)

Posted

WingedOne, as you've tried already what's in this thread, your prob is going to be harder to solve. At this point, I would strongly suggest you contact WW tech support. In the meantime, we'll troubleshoot. It would be nice to know if the game locks up in Skirmish and campaign mode, or both for that matter.

If you suspect your soundcard, try disabling or removing it. That should prove wether or not that's the prob. Another thing I would suggest, is to set the refresh rate somewhat lower (maybe to default) and try to run the game.

For all that have or are going to contact WW

tech support, I would be grateful if you could keep us updated on the progress.

It locks up in both campaign and skirmish mode.

I tried 800x600 w/ 16bit color today and still the same thing. I'm pretty sure all my drivers are current. I havent tried the tips on Pg14 yet, and I will when i get the time. I appreciate everyone's help and I know how busy you people are. Also, I read how similar people have my syptoms and have a VIA board w/ SB LIVE. I hope WW patches this or someone figures how to fix it.

Thanx everyone!!!

ps-keep trying on me

Posted

CheezX, let us know how you're doing with those suggestions on page 14. Another thing, the SBLive! and VIA thing is not to blame on WW. I believe VIA has especially for this prob, updated their chipset drivers. If I remember correctly, you need to have VIA 4in1 driver version 4.32 (I think it's located on page 14 as well, or one of the pages after that).

Nyar...

CheezX, what you could try is to lower your desktop resolution to 800x600 16. Run the game in the same resolution and see if that changes anything. You also have loads of background progs running and I assume that you close them while running the game ?

You said you've formatted the comp, did you make sure you updated all the drivers (I've noticed you did for the GeForce though) ?

Also, did you try what's been suggested in this thread ? On page 14 you'll find a summary of all pages before that. It might also be usefull to contact ww tech support. In the meantime, we'll do anything we can to solve your prob :)

I got the lastest VIA drivers. Also, I tried setting the desktop to 256 color, starting Emperor with +W, setting refresh rate to default, checking the version of ddraw.dll, checking the IRQ, and disabling screen saver. No affect. I'll try the more complex stuff(like bios and harware acceleration) later. Thats it for now, I'll keep you posted on what I find.

ps-I'm startin to think that its a defective RAM module because I bought a 256 kingston value ram from DELL.com a little while ago.

I'll check that this weekend.

Thanx

Nyar:

I tried it with the soundcard disabled, but it still locked up. However, my VIA chipset driver is 4.29va. In fact when I updated the driver to version 4.29va, it made the problem even worse. I couldn't get past the skirmish mode menu screen without it locking up. I'll try version 4.32 or 4.33 and let you know if it solves my problems.

OK, I finally did everything(except putting it in software mode because I can't find that dxsetup thing on the cd) on Pg14. Still the same thing. If anyone with a VIA motherboard and SBLive! or sumthing else has my problem(exiting to desktop after the EA and WestWood screens) , please tell me how you solved the proble, if you ever did. I know you're on vacation Nyar, so I'll wait for some time.

peace out!!

So far, I still didn't get my problem resolved. I wrote to Westwood Technical support and all I got back was a e-mail telling me to try the things I tried already. GRRRRRRRR!!!

I'll try either a new soundcard or new memory this weekend and see how that works.

I did notice one constant during my lock-ups would be whenever the lockup would occur I was performing some sort of action with the mouse (either clicking it or moving the pointer). I'm using a Microsoft Optical Trackball. I was wondering if that could be one source of my problem.

Hey everyone I have not posted in a while but I upgraded my 16mb voodoo3 to a Nvidia tnt2 32mb and now I have had no lockups since...I don't know why but it works has not locked up in over 3 hours of playing time before would lockup within 20 minutes and I am into the late Atredies missions...
