Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 And about verifying the ddraw.dll, I had 2 copies of it: one in windowssystem and another in windowssysbckup. Meaning that it is a backup. I checked both files version (right click-proprties-version) and they were both 4.08.00.0400, which means that even if (big if) windows uses the one in that other directory, it is still the most updated version of the file.

Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 I saw someone saying that the game locked up for him only on the campaign. So fat, I only played skirmish once, and it did not freeze, but that was a rather short game. I'm going to try playing a skirmish game again (I'll try to make it longer this time) and tell you what the results are. Whish me good luck 8)
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Yep, jeromeku has that problem. Would be good to see if you have the same problem. Also, let me know if the suggestions I posted helped in any way...Good luck :DNyar...
Guest jeromeku Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Nyar, yup thats me... only locking in Campaign mode :). I will try the "default refresh" rate thing as I run at 85hz at desktop. Who knows it might work.
Guest -X-ray Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 i tried all the solutions above but none of them worked. :(btw, i'm having the problem both on campaign and skirmish.but maybe i can direct you to the specific problem i have. I noticed that when i play the game after i restart my computer it can work 5-10 min, and when i play the game having many programs running (i.e. explorer, icq, winamp etc.) the game locks up after 1-2 min of playing.more over, i can tell when the game is going to freeze. appearantly, the game starts to have "jumps", a few minutes before it's totally lock up. so it may really be the leaking memory problem.i hope i guided you a little more in this... mystorious problem.try to solve it now :)
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 jeromeku, at least this way we've proven to have done everything we know and maybe WW will address the issue (although I'm still the defender of WW :DNyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 O.k. I just played a Skirmish game. I was Ordos and the comp was a medium defensive Harkonen. The game lasted between 30-40 mins (not sure) where usually (I repeat, USUALLY) the game will freeze on me, and it didn't! I got to see the harkonen base destroyed and the Victory logon display without needing to load any of the skirmish saves I saved so many times (it becomes a habit when your game freezes so often). So again, I can't say 100% that it freezes only on campaigns (never played multiplayer and have no intention ondoing so in the near future, at least until the freezing is solved), but this game lasted long enough and didn't froze! :Dbtw, nyar, what advice did you mean?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 yep, 30 min it is. I played right after I told you I'm going to and wishing luck.I didn't even need to restart my comp in order to get a free ram. Which tells you that the RAM and background program are not necessarily the problem. If (big if) the problem is only in the campaigns, than this is something that Westwood can fix for usre in a patch, am I correct?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 I'm goign to play one more game. This time I'll try to make it even longer.Wish me luck.
Guest jeromeku Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Nyar, Yes that is the correct link. I've been through the driver reinstall twice at this point. Matrox uses a package version to specify sets of drivers. So the numbers are not exactly the same in dxdiag output. I've also got the latest Graphic BIOS 2.1-35 :).[This message has been edited by jeromeku (edited 07-26-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Alley, if you ask me, the drivers should be able to load, no matter what language you're running.Anyway, I've just sent you the report for review, look it over and let me know what you think. Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Just a question: What is Microsoft Voice Commander anyway? I don't even know if I have it, although I'm pretty sure I don't. Is there any way to find out?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 I went to http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm and downloded the RAD video tools (was that what I was supposed to download?), installed it, but the movies keep freezing. :([This message has been edited by alley_cat (edited 07-26-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Microsoft Voice Commander, is a thingy with which you can play the game via voice. So yell to the Devastator to hurry up :DAt least, that's what I think it is (as far as I know the product).Nyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 You know, that fact that the same lockup problem happened on diffrent computers with very diffrent hardware should show that this problem is fixable by Westwood. Also, the fact that this only happens on campiagns and not on the whole game should also show that this is not a driver/hardware problem, since a thing like that couldn't possibly a hardware problem.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 We all agree that it's a weird problem. I am cracking my brain on what it could be.Still, it doesn't explain why it worked for me on 4 different comps => that's what's "bothering" me and keeps me going to look for any possible solution, besides asking WW for help.We know the problem (well, yours and jeromeku's anyway. I do not know who else has the exact same problem as you two have) happens on different system specs. We know there are differences between campaign and skirmish mode. One of those differences has to cause the problem somehow, in combination with any hardware/software you have. ****Devinoch, Dan, ChrisL, could any of you please post what the differences are between campaign and skirmish mode in terms of what the modes use differently as resource concerning Windows and/or hardware ?****Thanks in advance for any input.Nyar...
