Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Seems like it...jeromeku, I really would like to see your specs, and what language your OS is (just for the heck of it). As you and Alley seem to have both the exact same problem, may be there's some smililarity between both specs you're having...Devinoch, Dan, any suggestions why the game locks up in campaigne mode and not in skirmish ? What are the diffrences ?Nyar...
Guest -X-ray Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 u know alley, when i try to remember, i succeeded to finish the first skirmish i played too.and yes, i played for about 30 minutes without a single crash! (tears are coming out from my eyes when i say it...)anyway, now i got the problem both on campaign & skirmish.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Uhm, Alley, or jeromeku, can either of you try with the adapter refresh rate set to default ? It's just for test purposes. jeromeku, if you already tried, what was the outcome ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 -X-ray, Do you have one or two dimms of RAM ?If it's two, try the game with one removed, if the problem persists, try removing the other (of course with the first one back in again).Let me know.Nyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 I just finished playing a skirmish game that took me 45 mins. No restart also. Meaning that this one was even after my last game without restart + I had bilions of programs running before (such as IE) so westwood or anyone else: THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH MEMORY OR BACKGROUND APPS. I'm now 99% sure I only have lock-ups on campaigns. And I still have the movies freezing :( I never had such problem with RA2 or Tiberian Sun movies.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 When using the "Hardware Acceleration slider", try different positions on the bar, probably a light slide to the left already might work...Another thing, which I know it's been posted before, but here goes again: Try to reduce CD-ROM caching and prevent read-ahead activity: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click File System. On the CD-ROM tab, note the current settings, and then move the Supplemental cache size slider to the Small position. In the Optimize access pattern for box, click No read-ahead. Click OK, and then click Close. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. If these steps do not successfully resolve the issue, repeat the steps to restore the settings to the original values noted in step 4, and then proceed to the next method. Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Alley, at least you're able to play the game in Skirmish now, better then nothing and we seem to get somewhere (always looking at things from the bright side) :DNyar...
Guest jeromeku Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Nyar, As I said before EASY_EA.txt file suggests nothing cuz it doesn't work properly in Windows 2000. 99.9% of the information is not even there. It was probably written with the 9x series in mind.Maybe sysinfo or dxdiag would be better than easy_ea?BTW - I'm running Advanced Server... the English version. I'm in the US :).
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Okay, well...ehhmm... anything that you can think of about your specs, post it, regardless of what you need to use to get it here !! :DNayr...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 07-25-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Posted by Chris (admin):"alley_cat,By chance, do you have Microsoft Voice Commander? There is a known conflict between BINK (our movie player) and MS Voice Commander. There is a new bink.dll available from www.radgametools.com which fixes the movie crash problem, if that is the cause.--Chris"Thanks Chris !Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 A post from The Tyrant's Duncan (do not know what is solves, but here goes):"A hint (this worked for me with Mech Warrior 4, Starsiege, Baldur's Gate 2, and Diablo 2):If you've got a burner and you have a dell comp, DON'T USE THE OTHER CD DRIVE! that stupid drive gave me so much trouble. try installing and running the game on your CD burner. I've got the biggest piece of poo computer... 797 Pentium 3 Dell that runs slower and less reliable than my 133 Pentium 1 Compaq at least half of the time. E:BFD works like a charm on this garbage can that some people call a computer."Nyar...
Guest -X-ray Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Nyar, my computer rejected the default adapter option.but I do play with two chips of RAM (128 MB each), and I remove one of them tomorrow.BUT if it will solve the problem, than what?I'm not going to stay with only 128MB RAM.at least we'll know what the problem is :P
Guest jeromeku Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Does everyone have two CDROM drives?I've tried disconnectin my second one altogether, but still encountered the same behavior.
Guest jeromeku Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Nyar, My refresh rating didn't have a "default"selection so I tried setting it to 60hz (the lowest). Same lockup behavior. The other thing I have tried in the past is setting my desktop to the same resolution & color bit as the game. That also did not work.I'll post my specs once I have them in a file of some sort.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 If you have any lockup issues, please post here. Make sure that you post also the EAsy_EA.txt file ! Besides this file, a summary of what you have tried so far.I'm trying to get all issues under one roof.I'm one person who hasn't got any issues with the game, but will post my EAsy_EA.txt file as well for reference if needed.Devinoch, Dan, and anyone else involved from WW, can I please ask your support on this and provide us with some help and/or update every now and then ? => Thanks in advance !----EASy System Summary-------------------------------------- Video Card : ASUS V8200 Series v12.10a Video Driver : nvdisp.drv Driver Version : 4.13.01.1210 Sound Card : Creative SB Live! Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 If the game freezes, or turns black, try the following (Don't know if it'll work, but if so, it's your video card which is causing the problem):Win 98, right click on the desktop and select proporties. On the Settings tab, click Advanced. Click the Adapter tab. Use the Refresh Rate box on the Adapter tab to manuallyreset the video refresh rate for your monitor. To do this, follow these steps: On the Adapter tab, click Adapter Default in the Refresh Rate box. Click OK. If you are prompted to test the setting, click OK. If the setting appears to function properly, click Yes. If the setting does not function properly, click No.If the above doesn't work, follow below:Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click Graphics. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting). Click OK, and then click Close. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes. See if it does anything...Nyar...

Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Oops sorry. Posted the same thing twice. But nyar, what is the diffrence between lockup and freeze?[This message has been edited by alley_cat (edited 07-25-2001).]
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Alley_cat, did you try what I posted just above your post ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Good question, spent to much time here I guess :DNyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Actually no. But I'm not going to put my monitor refrsh rate on it's default. It looks crappy that way and no game worth it for me to use my comp that way.I am going to try what you suggested about the hardware acceleration.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Alley, it's just for test purposes, you can always change it back, but at least you'll know where to look ...Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 If the game locks up when you start it, try to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, follow these steps: Restart the computer. Insert the CD-ROM for the game. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program from starting automatically. Click Start, and then click Run.In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER cd-rom:setupdirectxdxsetup.exe where cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. Click to clear the Direct3D Hardware Acceleration Enabled check box. Click OK. **************Verify that the correct version of the Ddraw.dll file is installed, follow these steps:Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders. In the Named box, type ddraw.dll. In the Look In box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now. In the list of found files, verify that the Ddraw.dll file is installed in the WindowsSystem folder, and then rename any copies of the Ddraw.dll file that are not in the WindowsSystem folder. (make it something that you can remember easily, so when it doesn't do you any good, or when something else stops working, you're able to change it back !)**************Nyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 1) I tried the thing you said in the control panel with the Hardware accelaration, restarted, but when I tried to open the game, I got an error ("this program had performed...."), so I had to put it back to max and now it at least starts.2) I think you meant to type "dxdiag", not "dxsetup"3) I'm not going to disable hardware accelration through Directx diag from the above reason.4) The game requires as minimum requirement a video card which supports Hardware acceleration. That must mean something... ;)
