I guess it depends on the type of realism, but I can think of a lot of types of games that would be extremely boring if they were extremely realistic.

Take World War II Online for example. To make the game more realistic, they mapped out Europe in half scale. Even if they got the kind of numbers online that they were trying to get, you would still die of boredom playing it because it would still take 5 minutes on average to get to a battle.

Acriku is right, there has to be a balance. Why?

Another example: IL-2 Sturmovik. This game has the most realistic flying physics engine I've ever played, but imagine if it was extemely realistic, only pilots would be able to hop right in and play while everyone else would have to spend days, if not weeks playing it just to learn how to fly.

Some people want realistic games, but developers need to balance it out and make it unrealistic so that the majority of people playing it will have fun.
