K19 - The Widowmaker

A bit late, I decided to see this movie. And boy was it worth it! Harrison Ford was up to his usual high acting standards, but what I liked the most was that this movie showed the truth. The truth about the Cold War, in both America and Russia.

For example:

"(narrator) In 1961 the Soviet Union had enough nuclear warheads to destroy the world 2 times over. The United States had enough warheads to destroy the world 10 times over."

"In American propaganda you will see everyone having a great house, driving a nice car and having a beautiful wife. But you will not see the way they silence protesters against human rights violations [*cough* Martin Luther King *cough*]. You will not see the poor neighborhoods in their cities where people die in misery."

But also:

"There are two stories about your father: One that he was a hero of the Revolution, the other that he died in the Gulag..."

"Yes. Both are true."

"(narrator) The captain and crew were sworn to secrecy, and not until the fall of communism were they allowed to mourn their fallen comrades, or to tell their story to the world."

And the way the Party always expected things to be ready far faster than they normally would be... it's all true. Great movie.

You know, a few years ago I asked my grandfather how he felt back in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis... (back in the early '60s he was Deputy Ambassador to France, so he knew quite a lot about what was going on). He replied calmly, as if it was the most natural thing in the world:

"We were waiting for the war to begin."

Waiting for the war to begin... I can't imagine how close we really came to total annihilation.

We were waiting dozens of years, EdricO. Then it was, however, closer. Our missiles were in Cold War still aimed on west, just one command, and half of world is gone.
