Made me think of a being that didn't want to indulge on barbaric rituals, and is trying to keep his barbaric instincts and urges suppressed. Trying to be better for himself, kind of like a person who doesn't agree with his society, and tries to change himself to a better being by going away from it and stripping himself of it.
