Colorwashes

Chris Longpre stopped by the map making forum today providing some information on colourwashes. Here is what he posted:

Already, starting to see some nice maps popping up! I played a game on Tear Valley yesterday and had a blast!

I just wanted to point out color-washes to everyone. That huge 16MB test.tga file contains a default colorwash that you can use on any map. Its generic, but does do the job of washing the map.

If you've noticed your maps are 'brighter' and less detailed than the in-game maps, its because you need to add a colorwash. It requires some artistic skill, and some photoshop (or other editor) skills, but is very rewarding visually.

If you do not want to include the default 16MB file in your downloadable files, you can copy the one that comes from the editor MapEditorDataColourwashtest.tga into your map subdirectory. This will at least adjust the brightness, and give some noise detail to the map.

The manuals that come with the editor have a detailed explanation of how we create our colorwashes. Definitely for the 'advanced' map maker.

Colorwashes can be used to add spice, erosion stains, vehicle tracks, wear, blood, etc. to any map.

Anyways, keep up the great work all! - LINK

For those of you having problems or looking for help the official forums seem to be a fairly good place to look.

Since last Friday's chat went fairly well we may be having another, check back later in the week for more info. For now reading through the help files is probably the best way to get a handle on how the map editor works.
