So, here I sit, another night unable to play Dune 2000...(sigh)

A little history;

I am one of those guys that got the game back in '98, when it cost upwards of $80 when it first came out. Whatever 286/386/486 system I had back then (in the dark ages) ran it like a kitten. So after playing it a ba-zillion times, I lent it out to a friend...and never got it back.

BUT...I had also discovered Command and Conquer and then...Emperor...Battle For Dune...which I all own and play. Then a co-worker and I were talking about the games we played (a few years ago) and I mentioned Dune 2000...lo and behold, he had the game but could not get it to run. He gave it to me and with some fooling around...I got it to run.

THEN..disaster struck. I got a virus, had to back up my HD and restore my PC to factory settings...

...now, for the life of me - I cannot get it to run.

I have perused some of the postings for the XP (which I still run) fixes and have played around with the compatability modes, the -g...but it still freezes to the blank screen (with music) after the video ends (..."we of the sisterhood have seen blah blah blah")

Here's the funny part;

I am running a DELL Inspiron 2200 with XP, the same system who someone had mentioned they easily had the game running on....F%$#!^&*%$#@*&!!!!!

I would pull my hair out, if I had any left. But instead I play Emperor again, and again and again...

Anyone think they might have something that would help?

Thanks!

Cranky

Few things you can try:

  • Set compatibility mode to windows 98
  • Set the program to run in 256 colors
  • use the oldest graphics card drivers you can find
  • Try the Grunt Mods Edition

If these all fail virtual machine is the way to go.

OK,

I've installed Directx from MS

I've installed the 1.06 patch which automatically puts the game in 256/win 98 comp mode

I've tried running the 8bit version

I've tried the -g suffix

I've installed the Directx 5a patch they recommend in the readme file

The error message I get in Notepad in the Dune2000 directory is:

Dune 2000 requires a 256 colour desktop to run.

This video card does not support the required modes.

Insufficient RAM and/or Virtual Memory. Check Virtual Memory settings and disk space to ensure at least 12Mb is avilable.

File not found

Please reinstall

I have removed and reinstalled a half dozen times.

Question:

Where would I find the 'oldest graphic card driver'?

What is the Grunt Mods edition? Where to get it ?

Thanks,

Cranky

I do not think the patch sets compatibility, you have to do that manually.

The Grunt Mods Edition is a version I made with a new installer, pre pached and without a CD check. I also add content with the patch system I made from time to time.

You need to find out what graphics you have on your computer in order to find the drivers. Search your computer for "dxdiag" without the quotes and run it. Make sure to check system folders in the search.

Dear Gruntlord,

I sent you an email with the printout from the dxdiag 'display' tab. I also installed the grunt mod version and got to the menu point. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

BTW: In your readme, you mention:

Make sure to run msvbvm50.exe from your game install directory.

I'm clueless...(as if it surprises you! lol)

Thanks,

Cranky

Thats more for shai-halud useage, but you may as well run it. C:\Program Files (x86)\Grunt Mods Studios\Dune 2000\msvbvm50.exe

Gruntlord!

I just wanted to thank you now that I've had a chance to overdose on D2K...the wife ain't too happy...but what you gonna do?

So, I've played all 3 houses and gotten through to the end. I see where you can select each mission individually (under the "Load saved game")...I was wondering if there were any other add on missions? I loaded your upgrade and the game plays just as well as when it wasn't loaded.

Thanks for all your help!

no so Crankypants, anymore...

You do not use the load savegame option.
