never heard of a checksum before?

here's a definition by wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checksum

to sum it up: checksums are used for veryfing data, e.g. if you download a file from a server it may happen that some errors occur, some data is lost or whatever. by comparing the checksum of your downloaded file to the file on the server it can be assured that it's the same data. if something got lost on its way, the checksum of the downloaded file won't match the checksum of the file on the server.

ps: don't be sorry for being a noob, be sorry for not using google and wikipedia  :P
