Hello All (and everyone else),

So over the last month and a bit I've been working for a masonry company. What I did not know when I started was that the owner was such an a-hole he was kicked off three job sites last year and banned from working from a contracting company because the supervisors got sick of the way he acted towards his employee's. For example, one of the apprentices is continualy berated for being of polish descent. I, on the other hand, am simply an idiot and mother ****er.

He has even had several dozen complaints lodged against him to the labour board of Ontario.

Yesterday I was warned by one of hte bricklayers there that he was not paying me my travel time. I check the hours on the stub against the actual hours and descovered that that was correct. I even had travel time taken off for a day I was sick and did not even work. Iw as also warned that Iw as going to be layed off next week befor eI noticed the hours were coming off my cheque and confronted him about it.

When I confronted my boss last night I was told I was a student and part time, so he changed his mind about having to pay me travel time. At that point I looked for and found another job.

I was going to be polite, give a weeks notice, blah blah blah for the sake of my mom who works with and is friends with the owners wife (how I got the job int he first place) but then I got fed up with his constant tongueing. I walked up to him, said "I've been offered another job in Hanover. It starts monday. I'm leaving with _____ at three when he goes for his chiropracters appointment."

The boss, being the pansy that he is when confronted (he cannot even stand to give me my cheque in person, he's taping it to his door for me), did nothing but turn his head away and say "yep yep ok."

He was then very nice to me for the hour until I left.

I later learned that he was indeed planning on laying me of next week anyway. What he doesn't know is that several other employees whoa re fed up with him are all planning on calling him ten minutes before the work day starts and telling him that they quit.

So I have tommorow off and then friday I start a new job painting. Better hours, same pay when you factor in the hours I lost (and his laying me off once a week), more pay once I get used to the job as it is peicmeal work, so the faster I get at working the more money I will make.

I'm missing some (4+ days) work because of a stupid spring course I took. I'm only 9 days late in passing in an assignment too.

When I confronted my boss last night I was told I was a student and part time
Student Wage

This rate applies to students under 18 years of age who work 28 hours a week or less when school is in session, or students employed during a school break or summer holidays.

What exactly is this travel time thingy? If you are simply driving to and from work (I'm guessing at different locations every week or so), I am not sure if you would get paid, unless it was stated as so before employment. They can not say they are going to give you travel time and then not pay you for it. I know referees on PEI (who are in a referee association) get paid travel time, but that is because they travel all over the place (sometimes up to 2 hours away).

Were you a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers or another union? Did you see the collective agreement between who you were working for and the union, if one was present and if you were part of the union? If you were not part of the union, you may still have been protected under the collective agreement.

Were you part of one of these two unions:

Our jobs are about an hour and a half to two hours away.  Everyone gets an hour of paid travel time.  Then he changed his mind and gave it to everybody but me.

Did I mention that while he was payin me $10 an hour he told the companies that hired him he was payign me twelve so he could skim two from me each hour?

No union.
