A few years back, 5th-placed Real Madrid got a CL place instead of 4th-placed Real Zaragoza only because Real Madrid were a big, powerful and influential club and even the Spanish FA were afraid of them. Real Zaragoza knew this was totally unfair and outrageous but they couldn't do anything about it. The Spanish FA claimed that this was so that Spain would have stronger representation. Rules are rules but sometimes they can be bended. Let's see what happens...

Uh, I believe the winning country no longer qualifies automatically for the next Euro. I think that will have to play in the qualifying round to play in Euro 2008 like France did for Euro 2004. So actually we don't get the chance to defend the title - we can only earn it. Liverpool did not earn it.

Yep I read about that, Chris. I think that sounds right and is much better than the 'Take Fenerbahce's spot' option that someone offered.

If all this offerings begin, then teams like Mallorca and future 5th-placed teams should start approaching and buying qualifying places from teams that believe they have no European hope at all and don't want to bother wasting their time trying to qualify, like that Welsh team.

Yeah exactly that is the point. The 5th-placed teams in Spain, Italy or England will be looking up that Welsh team at the end of every season.
