I have a few old MP2 files that I would like to convert to MP3 format. Is there a program available that will convert them for me?

You can do it, although we would wonder why you would want to. The older MP2 compression system isn't as effective at retaining the true spirit of the sound as MP3 is, and converting existing MP2 files would do nothing to improve the sound quality. In actual fact, the quality would degrade, since the file would have been compressed twice - remember that both version 2 and 3 of the compression system are 'lossy' algorithms, and that a portion of the original sound data is lost every time you decode and re-encode a file. For a visual representation of how ugly this can get, try recompressing a picture file as a JPG five or six times, and see the drastic drop in quality. That said, if you want to go ahead, the easiest way is to use WinAmp to decode the MP2 file to a WAV sound direct to disk, then encode as MP3 with the software you normally use. Download a free copy from www.winamp.com.  ( extract from pc answers article  )
