A general rule of thumb with series of any kind (books, movies, etc) is to read them in the order in which they were written.  That is the order in which they were intended to be read, for one could not read "Battle of Corrin" before "House Atreides" six months ago, before Battle of Corrin had been published.

This is the order in which you should read the Dune series:

1. The originals by Frank Herbert

2. The "House" prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

3. The "Legends of Dune" (Butlerian Jihad, etc) prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

This applies to any series.  Ideally, you would read Asimov's Foundation trilogy before reading Prelude to Foundation, as the latter was written about thirty years after the former.

No you would not gain anything. You would probably lose out.

So read them in order they are printed. Just like Vanguard said.

Not entirely related, I think I started to read Heretics of Dune before reading GEoD. Boy was I confused. :P (I had Heretics copy before GEoD was available)
