You forgot that socialist/communism doesn't work in underdeveloped countries, like Chile. Probably it worked with Russia or China.

The poor people didn`t take advantages from Agrarian Reform. Most of them just left their lands careless.

Sadly, that debate seems to have been the only thing keeping this thread alive...

Actually, the reason the thread died was because I did not answer all the posts I should have; there are still a few more matters to discuss here.

Very well. It thought the connection was a fairly obvious jump to make but if nobody else saw it it must be my pessimism getting the best of me.  I take back what I said.  My apologies, Edric.

Apologies accepted; no harm done. :)

Pinochet's revolt was alongside them, made by one chilan dissident, of course with general himself presented as CIA agent.

That is an exaggeration. Pinochet was certainly supported and funded by the CIA, but he wasn't trained by them. In fact, the CIA didn't pay any attention to Pinochet until he became a potential ally in the 70's.

Hard to imagine why Pinochet ordered such mass killings (and other forms of terror) with scale far worse as what we could see here about 60 years before, and yet spared such guys as this one - he claimed that he was jailed, but freed and exiled 5 years later.

Even mass murderers make mistakes. ;) I don't know the full situation, of course, but there are many dissedents (in many different dictatorial regimes) who managed to escape the kind of persecutions suffered by others - often simply because they were considered too insignificant to bother with.

Or how is it possible that potential socialist ally was so ignored by eastern powers, if really were USA involved.

Allende was a member of the Socialist Party of Chile, NOT the Communist Party of Chile. He was a Marxist, but not a Leninist. The Soviet Union probably supported the Chilean communists, who were opposed to Allende because he wasn't radical enough.

Chile wasn't an underdeveloped country - it was certainly far more developed than China in 1949 or Russia in 1917! And if socialism worked partially there (I say "partially" because it quickly degenerated into stalinism, which does have a few elements in common with socialism, despite being a different system - in much the same way as a capitalist welfare state has some elements in common with socialism, despite being a different system), then I think it's safe to say it would have worked well in Chile. Particularly since Allende made a major point out of preserving democracy, whereas in Russia and China democracy was soon eroded and destroyed (precisely because not enough attention was devoted to preserving it - among other factors, such as the fact that neither Russia nor China had ever known democracy before their respective communist revolutions).

The poor people didn`t take advantages from Agrarian Reform. Most of them just left their lands careless.

So what did they eat, then? They obviously didn't cultivate their lands on an industrial scale, but they had to cultivate it to some extent, because that was their livelihood. And as far as I remember, there was no drop in agricultural production during the Allende years (there was, however, a sharp drop in exports - due to the US embargo).

Remember that at least some form of democracy was participated in Greece when most European countries still lived as tribes. Maybe not completely just or equal to exactly everyone, this prooves that no system is too "new" or old for it's time.

The reason why there were so many dictatorships were because of the power and sayings, like "God chose me to be king" or "the party know the best solution, always" and so on.
