Sorry to bump an old post but consider this, mammals, and infact all other organisms adapt to their surroundings, yet we adapt our surroudings to suite us.  There was also the thing which Agent Smith said in the Matrix...can't remember what it was.

I think it was something like

All mammals eventually find some equilibrum with their surroundings. Humans don't...they squander the recources around them, then move to the next area. There is another organism with that trait...a virus.
