You guys know by now I am not the best speller in the world, and I think I spelled Epicurian right. That isnt a good way to start a topic but oh well.lol

Anyways waht do you guys think of this philosophy? I tend to dislike it much, though it does have it's logic. It tends to say that there may or may not be a God(s) (many epicurians did believe in the supernatural) But that it really isnt the issue in this life, and that there is no afterlife, so that we should enjoy the time we have on this earth. We should sieze the moment. This is kinda general, but that is basically a part of what they believe. You guys can go mroe into detail if you want and share some info with me, as I dont claim to be an expert, just dont be condescending.lol

anyways Hedonism, which seems to be the major focus of Epicurian philosophy actually makes sense in this one way.

If atheists are right, and there is no higher power, or if there is but there is no afterlife or reward, then we should try and sieze the moment and enjoy life, trying to gain knowledge and find love. Not to hurt others but to help and grow in human wisdom.

But if there is a higher power, and there is a plan, then It is completely wrong in my personal opinion, just my opinion. Because then life isnt subjective, which is a major focus of hedonism and epicurianism. If tehre is something higher with a plan, then that plan is the objective for humanity, if it is aimed for humanity like christianity says for example, then the subjectivity of hedonism goes against the will of that higher power and is foolish.

what do you guys think?

An argument that critiques a religion, with the first assumption being it's wrong and I'm right can't always be good... but I agree in part, I'll never like the belief that we all just join the void at death. Karma, to me, is a more logical and just system of operating.

oh no I wasent trying to imply the Im right your wrong thing, I hope you didnt get that at all. I was just wondering if you see what I mean, and I agree with you that the idea of Karma and elevation and sinking of the soul seems a bit deeper than some eastern philosophies try to show, I agree more with some hindu ideals rather than many buddhist thoughts on the matter, though they are much different in many ways, so it is hard to say.

I know TMA, of course, it just seems in a lot of these arguments from a lot of people, the basic premise is that some Christian beliefs simply and naturaly have to be. I'm sure it's not advertant, lol, and perhaps I'm out of line in suggesting it :P It's just something I noticed. And you didn't come off rude or anything, lol, not at all :P In essence, I dislike it too, because it allows for the avenue of thought that you might as well screw everyone else and make your own life a small slice of heaven.

I don't think that the epicurians are really seizing the moment the best way. Hedonism and its variants do not bring to seize the moment, but rather to seize the illusion of a moment.

Epikuros thought not hedonism, he was just misinterpreted. Highest pleasure for him was collecting and spreading of knowledge. Hedonism is more suitable term for sensual joy.

Yes, but I still consider Epicurianism to be a variant of the same tree where Hedonism is. It's about taking the things you have around you that brings something to your daily happiness, without having a sense or direction really.

To me, all these things around me are an pretext for something else.
