Yes I did know that actually. The fact that the Golan Heights were also housing hundreds of gunman also makes a good case for taking it. And  it's not like they could use it as a vantage against the Syrians or for anything else that would seriously hurt anyone in any way shape or form. Israel has always been tiny. They've had the opportunity to expand into conquered areas, but have always backed off.

Personally I am quite disappointed by Sharon's call to end colonization. It could enlarge the size of area, where muslims and Jews live mixed. And they would find once a way how to live peacefully, if we could with Hungarians and Germans, they must be able to do so as well...

I agree. It would be a long term project, but in the end beneficial. Politicians of our day insist on being short sighted on almost every occassion. The US could improve Arab relations by leting them know that we don't eat babies and that we don't hate Muslims (in general... and I'd bet a couple people have eaten babies, but that's beside the point :P).

Sharon was doing possibly on US pressure. After strike on New York it seems to be not as much time as it was in era of Rabin and Peres. Arafat sees a chance here, so he started to squeeze the opportunity.
