Are we mindless drones?

Okay I've skimmed through most of the relevant material and while I'm not going to comment on everything I have a reaction to (like in some other posts, *cough*) so instead, I'll treat you all to my short opinions :):

I heard a great phrase on another BBS, "sheeple".  Sheep-people.  People who are sheep.  The thing is, while I don't think that democracy makes us into "mindless drones", it allows us the opportunity, and ironically, the choice to become such.

Basically, in the type of society that we currently have, there is enough stuff out there so that if you work hard all day then come home and don't WANT to think, you simply switch on the TV/read a novel/play computer games/drink beer/etc.  You don't have to participate, there are so many ways to lose yourself in inconsequential trivia.  In which case, of course the state doesn't MAKE us into mindless drones, we do that to ourselves.

Obviously this is a sweeping generalisation (see my other post in here...) but I think it's about accurate.  People have the choice to be concerned about things and most aren't interested/don't want to/are too busy, and so take some other route.  And dince we're on the BBS for a popular fiction series/computer game series, you and I both have done the same.  Can you deny that?

At least we're discussing it but think of the other six billion people  ???
