can you copy the NTLDR file from your WinXP cd to your hard drive ?

and what was the reason you did the restrore in the first place ?

have you changed any aspect of your boot partition / hard drive resently ?

its xp home edition.

have you changed any aspect of your boot partition / hard drive resently ?yes part of the system recovery informe me that it would change it,so i just continued.

i cant copy anything for two reasons;im not clever enough with pc's,and the only option i get is as above, ctrl alt del.

i do get the 'recovery' option for 5 seconds but fails to load xp,even though all the files get copied.

one other thing on boot up it says

boot from non emulating cd rom,....what does that mean?

:P

the reason for recovery in the first instance was that all programmes and stuff was running very very slow,on task manager the cpu usage was always 100%.seemed the only way to clean it to new..............

Boot up the Laptop, press and hold the delete key on the keyboard, once your in the BIOS, look for boot order, select the cd rom as first boot device.

Then save the changes using F10 key.

Did you try the above ?

do you mean when the black and white text stuff comes up ie memory test ,and before the enter system configuration option?

sorry im so slow, but i have xp for dummies on order.

No. once the system has checked the memory, just before  Windows is started you should see, a line in white letters on a black background, saying boot from IDE 1 or CD.Something similar to that.

If that doesn't work try pressing F8 repeatedly whilst booting up, to select boot in safe mode!

When your in safe mode, navigate to Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, then select system restore, select a restore point.

Let the system restore wizard run,it will take awhile, but when it re-boots you should be back in windows.

i try that every time.but unfortunately it never actually boots up to windows the disc whirrs round, then the inevitable
