Athlon 64 combatibility

I was thinking about getting myself a brand new shiny AMD Athlon 64 3200+ but I think there is some compatability problems with the 64bit technology? Will everything run at it's optimum speed (fully harnessing the 64bittyness)?

i am not sure. I think all winxp programs will run fine. However programs before the winxp time may have some problems with running on a 64 bit processor and either need an emulator or just won't run. But i don't know this though, they might just as well run as well as on any other computer

I've heard that the Athlon 64bit CPU is slower than the better Pentium 4s on todays games.

However, when apropriate operating systems, and games for 64bit processors arrive, you'll want one.

I would wait with buying one though, because it might get cheaper as time goes by.

Also does anyone know whether half-life 2 will be compatible with it?
