Has anyone else experienced a strange problem that I have noticed ?

I am running Windows XP Pro with Sp1 and Sp2 installed.

After running the auto update app and installing the new hotfixes, I can't access my CD Rom or my CD R `?

When I click on my desktop shortcuts to my Drives I get an error message telling me that windows is searching for file E and F respectively.

If I uninstall the SP 2 service packs they both work again.

This is a really weird problem, as I havn't yet tracked down exactly which patch is causing the problem.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Hi Doc,

any luck with finding out the cause for my problem ?

My shortcuts are still missing to my Cd Rom and my CD R,

strange thing is I can access both drives in My Computer Duh ???

I can't find out on the net any info on this problem.

But I read that alot of people were having problems with LG Cd Roms especially model CRD8521B 52X drives.

NBo, no luck so far. What you could try to do is to find updates on the cdrom/rw drivers. As for the cdrw, I do not know what program you use to copy cd's, but you might want to check for an update.

Alright, took some time and sat down for your problem (figuring it would take me a while to solve it).

I hooked up my cd rw and downloaded Nero 6 (the demo version and bought the serial ;)).

Windows xp pro is already updated to the latest version.

Rebooted, opened windows explorer... and both drives are there.. *shrugs*, no problems for me...

What cd copy program do you use ? I did have the same problem when I installed an older copy program..

I also have Nero 6.0.

It seems to be the Windows XP auto update app that installs Sp 2 updates from Microsoft ! hotfixes ?

These hotfixes are the ones causing the problems, not SP 1.

I have Sp2 and all hotfixes, in fact, I just downloaded (and installed) 2 more and all still works..

Have you got a program liek Alcohol or something that adds another virtual drive to your computer on which an ISO image for instance is mountable ?

The desktop shortcut's arn't working although you can access them in local computer ?

Are ther drivers in local computer E and F ?

And you could try to add new shortcuts on the desktop. ..

Hi Doc,

well I just spent the last hour and a half finding out the cause of my problems.

After searching Microsofts knowledge base I found it, Article no:824143.

They know about this problem !

Apparently hotfix no:821557 MS03-027 is the update responsible.

I had to contact Microsofts telephone help line and after just 38 Minutes !!! lol.

They said they would send me the hotfix via e.mail to solve this problem, within the next 48 hours.

Wow they're really fast workers at Microsoft !

I can now understand a little why the guy responsible for the sobig 32 worm virus, sent the accompanying message to Microsoft about fixing there software before releasing it on the human race.

Talk about stress, their web site also stated that I could wait until they release the next Service Pack for XP ! but their Tech. didn't even know when it would be released !

It amazes me that they think I should wait indefinately before I can use my CD-Rom / CD-R again.

I think Microsoft really sucks I mean Bill Gates can't ever spend the money he's already got in his lifetime, I read this in an article recently.

It's a great pity that he seems unable to give it's customers a service that is simple cheap and fast.

Thanks very much for your help on this matter and the trouble you took to try and solve my problem, it was very much apreciated.

;) :D :) ::)

I finally received the E-mail from Microsoft with the download password ? wow ! Microsoft have to password everything.

So I downloaded the fix entered the Password and installed the patch.

Talk about complicated, I thought about people who wouldn't know how to do this kind of thing.

Microsoft Tech department don't seem to realise that non technical people would find it really difficult understanding their techy terms.

They also kindly informed me that this fix is still being worked on, and is not yet openly available to the general public, for downloading.

So it was at my own risk if I decided to install it.

They have got to be kidding me, I was on hold for 38 Minutes before their Tech said he'd send me the info for downloading the file !! This was after speaking to the girl who finds out first what your problem is, this took another 10 minutes.

When I got through that stage I was faced with those damned option menus, u know, press 1 for this two for that and three to self destruct, which is what I hoped would be on key 3 of my phone, shame I could just imagine pushing that key,

Finally after re-booting my CD Rom and my CD-R now work again ! Muhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

And Microsoft wonder why it's customers get pissed off.

They must have had the biggest complaints department in the world, before they made it almost impossible to report their crappy software to them, by any other form than one that costs the user money.

Sorry ! but I needed to get that off my chest.

Who knows maybe a Microsoft tech is reading this right now. If so Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarf ! ;D

Thought that is the same disclaimer supplied with the Windows operation system, you never get any garantees that it excually works on your computer.
