  1. Hmm. Ah well, good to know. Wasn't planning on having this finished until October anyway, so I suppose I'll have plenty of time to get good. On that note, does anyone have a link to the .xbf viewer/editor thingy? I've just searched the forums and learnt of it's existence, but all the links I found were dead :( Here's some of my further ideas for this mod; At Relatively poor Infantry second only to Sardaukar...and Fremen Relatively expensive units Half-price Fremen compared to ord (House=Atreides, PrimaryBuilding=Fremencamp) (honourable) Hark Richest Keep flametroops (dishonourable) Lose rocket troops Rubbish infantry Cheap units Double-price Fremen compared to ord Ord Mid Keep chem/mortar troops (dishonourable) Lose rocket troops Mid-skill infantry (maybe instant kill-poisoned blades?) Mid-price units and Fremen Fremen Rocket troops Best fighters Expensive No shields Sardaukar Second only to Fremen
  2. Before I continue wasting my time, has anyone ever tried to mod Emperor to make it true[er] to the novels? I'm talking about removing most/all of the vehicles, giving all the infantry knives, shields...maybe even see if the worm/shield frenzy is implementable or make the shields work properly (doubt the latter's do-able, but I've already thought of a way to do the former), change the lasgun colour to purple, change the house crests so they're better... And, of course, get rid of the weirding modules... So far, I've...managed to get a shield on the infantry, though it isn't visible...I'm presuming I'll need a 3D model for that? How does one go about altering those..? (I've only been playing around with rules.txt so far...I only started a few hours ago, hehe) And I've also got a knife of sorts working on the Atreides infantry...but what actually happens is they run up real close and then the gun-shooting anim/sound plays...I'm guessing some significantly-heavier modding of the 3d models would be required to rectify this? I'm loathe to copy the elite sardaukar model to all the infantry units, but if necessary I suppose I could differ textures..? (I'm just guessing here, don't have any experience with fiddling with the 3d models...like I said, I don't even [yet] know how...) So, any advice/guidance/thoughts, anyone?
  3. My apologies if this has already been answered, didn't read the whole thread, but; Is it merely the shield that explodes when a laser hits it, or does the firing lasgun also explode in sub-atomic-explosiony death? I'm wondering because, although both firer and target explode in E:BFD, the impression I got from the books was always that it was simply the shielded target that did, and the lasgun-firer was only killed because they would be within the blast radius ???
  4. I'd have to say the Ordos homeworld. I haven't done it on Harkonnen, but as Atreides I went straigtht for it and wiped them out easy. Just build your base to defend against the assaults, having units marching around the base entrance to stay away from the worst of the Chaos lightning, send a cloaked unit to find the grand hall, and the conyard and base, and amass Ornithopters/gunships. When they're on the ground the lightning doesn't affect them. Wait until you have at least 15, preferably 20/25 or more. Then send them all to attack the conyard and palace, then in the next attack take out the grand hall. Easy.
  5. I use that tactic regularly in single player, except for my base's defence. Stand the minos at the top of the slopes between the build/no-build ground and the mongeese halfway down. Build enough so the entire "entrance" to your base is covered, and have the repair vehicles about halfway so they'll repair both types. The AI will never be able to break through. Problem is, I tried it on my first online game, confident in the superiority of my tactics, and was totally unprepared when the single mino I'd been able to build was slaughtered by ~30 laser tanks and a similar number of dust scouts. As for superweapons, I find the Hawk strike to be quite weak, unless used tactically. E.g. You're launching a large ornithopter strike and massed enemy AA troopers are going to take you down before you do the damage. Use the strike and they're gone. The Chaos lightning is very useful, as to amass an army that's what you have to do: amass it. Chaos lightning on an almost-complete uberarmy and the enemy's fighting force is reduced to wounded units and scrap. I haven't used Harkkonens in ages, but from what I remember I think I thought theirs was the best. Admittedly that was when I considered raw destructive power was the best.
