Nyar.

Congrats on a brilliant post. I must ask how your knowledge of computers is so large

Now for the problem

A friend of mine says that the new 1.08 patch has problems, he downloaded it and the game is the same the weaponry the maps and next time he goes on WOL it asks him to install the patch. I have seen the install it looked perfect noting missing no errors (i know this because i installed the patch before on my comp and it works perfectly) but nothing when he runs the game. He has installed it 4 times now and nothing happens. Could you give us some advice/ a solution it would mean a lot to him.

Thanx

Hi There, was just wondering if anyone can help. I cannot play campaign, but skirmish works MOST of the time; much like alley_cat and number6 earlier(my movies do run, tho).I have tried the graphix accelerator, adapter default and cdrom tweeks...no avail. Am currently downloading new "old" Voodoo3 drivers(1.04 and 1.05, jic) from gamers-ammo.com. I believe this helped the earlier gamers w/ my same vid card, but I don't know if they got the whql or Beta drivers. Here's my EAsy info if you're still doing the survey of DirectX files or other data, too.

Any help would be appreciated, WW has already censured my past posting so: yes, I tried tech support and no, they didn't respond in over a month.

Thanx, tuna

Oh yeah, I have tried the graphix options in game and on display settings turning them all to lowest settings and it still locks up. Music continues to run til I press ctrl+alt+del 1 time and it begins to skip and my keyboard/system totally freezes.

I also have not been able to get more than 4 seconds into any Red Alert(1) games w/o same results. Tiberian and Dune 2K work flawlessly on all games, hmmmm.

Thx again,

tuna

I noticed a couplr of you mentioned memory, and having or getting over 500MB of RAM.

Some Windows OSes do not manage this much memory properly. Windows 2K does, and I think ME can handle 256 MB effectively while 98 can only handle 128MB effectively. At 512MB, the memory manager does not hadle the memory well enough to prevent conflicts...less more run programs effectively.

Here's an excerpt from my PC entry on overclockers.com australia:

OS: Windows 98 1st Edition

Version: 4.10.1998

DirectX Version: 8.01

Other Info: I've tweaked the memory settings so that Windows now manages over 500MB of my RAM.

The mods are in the system.ini file. Under the 386Enh folder, I have added the line IRQ11=16384. My video and ethernet cards use IRQ11. This adds a 16MB buffer to the IRQ, which, in turn, enhances the performance of whatever is on that IRQ.

I've also meddled with the vcache folder. I added the lines Chunksize=1024

DirectoryCache=128

Namecache=3072

maxfilecache=204800

minfilecache=40960

For more info on these tweaks, please visit the forums at www.voodoosource.net.

IRQ 11 is the IRQ for my video card.

If you have more than 128 MB ram with Win 98 or more than 256 with WinME, then try the following settings:

Chunksize=1024

DirectoryCache=128

NameCache=2048

minfilesize= (number of MB for minimum swapfile x 1024)

maxfilesize= (numebr of MB for maximum sawpfile x 1024)

It is recommended that you set the minimum swapfile to 40 MB and the maximum swapfile to 90 MB

In the 386Enh forlder, type the following line: IRQxx=4096 where xx is the IRQ for your video card. To find this IRQ, right click "My Computer", slecet properties, seect display adapters, then double click your primary display card and click the resources tab. Scroll down in the box until you find a line that says Interrupt or IRQ and has a number. That number is the IRQ you need to put where xx is in that line in the system.ini.

Many thanks to RoundMan44 of www.voodoosource.net for posting these tweaks over there on their forums.

wow... this thread is huge!!!!! Nice to see that so many ppl have benefited from it.

I think there is a better tech support knowledge base in this thread than there is in the Westwood computers :).

Hats off to Nyar & everyone else.

tunapez, when you've installed the 1.04 drivers, place the option -c and/or =w behind the shortcut. That solved the problems for Alley_cat.

Let me know how it goes !

Nyar...

PS. Sorry for the late reply but have been busy the last couple of days :)

shadow461, thanks for sharing that info with us. Although, I have to admit that I'm running Windows ME, and have more then 500 ram. This hasn't caused any probs (yet 8) ).

Hey Nyar, yes it did after a little tweaking, thanx for all the time you've invested here. The puter I use online doesn't automatically update windows so I had a hard time locating this thread. My performance is low, but I have managed to get thru 13 levels of Ordos without a crash. Sometimes I have to exit the program and restart due to the "no highlight building/can't pan screen while units are selected", but a simple exit and re-run fixes that. Thanx again for the help, hope Westwood's taking care of you for all the hard work.

Hello all! First, I'd like to thank everyone here for offering tips and fixes for all of us suffering from problems with emperor, you guys keep up the good work! Now, I can't tell you how excited I am about finally fixing my problem permanently (at least, so far, knock on wood)! FYI, I used to have a problem in Emperor when attempting to navigate menus and always being dropped to the desktop. I can play campaigns missions fine, just navigating menus (especially when selecting a territory to attack) crashed me to desktop. Well, no more. As some of you may already know, the new Nvidia Detonator 4 v21.81 drivers have just been released today and I've been anticipating them not only for the performance improvements (which are little at best, but motion appears smoother even though fps isn't much higher) but for the chance they may fix my Emperor problem. Well, they have, I've been sitting here, staring at the menu screen for choosing a territory to attack for the last hour and no crash. I've also played a 5-hour campaign as well (playing as hark on emperor worm mission, on normal, yeah, I suck :)) with no lockups/crashes. So, if some of you geforce owners who have been having some crashes to the desktop or freezes in game, give the new detonators a shot. Who knows...just thought I'd give everyone a heads up!

i reply to your posy Nyar we found the problem!!!

When the patch was installed on his pc because his programmes are modified and it is a home built pc he needed to upload the patch onto the pc. The patch was in a storage folder under his WW internet file and had to be copied to emperor. LOL so if you need the answer for the future there you are.

Omega6_Fox, you're having two display adapters. Try to use the option -altvid behind the shortcut. As I do not know what you've done so far, try also contacting WW tech support. Another thing, a summary of suggestions can be found on page 14. Please look at them and try them.

Let us know if anything changes (or not).
