That comes in the menu when you boot up. When you turn on your comp, it boots up and comes up with the menu and 2 options. Option 1 (default) Windows XP and option 2 Windows 98. With the arrow keys you can select which OS you want to boot up with. If you don't choose anything, it'll boot up with the default OS (Windows XP). If you want to boot up with Win 98, you haveto use the down arrow to select Win 98. :)

That's my problem. I don't get any option to choose with booting.

When I boot, it first shows the BIOS of my video card.

Then it shows all info about memory check and etc. This is were you can press del to go to the BIOS

Then it gives me a progress bar of starting up Windows XP

And then Windows XP starts

Well, I hope you aren't angry on me that I didn't reinstall Windows XP after installing win 98. But there is no way I would do that.

If that is the problem then it is too bad that it doesn't work, and I will keep doing the OS selecting by switching primary boot hard disks.

Thanks for the help though

Unless I can do something to the unrecommended boot.ini ???

Of course I'm not angry, I don't see any reason why.

And yes, if you want this to work, you need to reinstall unfortunately. At least you can keep the link for future use :)

You may be able to edit the boot.ini, but I have no visibility on as to change what. And remember, you might screw up the system..

That was one I thing I didn't tell, that I hadn't reinstalled everything in the right order.

I know problems you can get with booting. But do you know something about the boot.ini. If I'm sure it is edited right, then I can try altering that.

Ok, thanks. I think I can figure some things out. The text you type like 'Windows XP Home Edition' in that file will probably be the string you see when you can select an OS.

And the ID specefies the partition it will boot?

Then I will have to find out which ID's there are used.

According to my BIOS, HDD0 is the harddisk with WinXP, and HDD1 is the partition of the other harddisk with Win98 (HDD2 is the other partition, but this one doesn't matter)

Maybe you can help me finding those ID's?

As far as I know, you have to do the following (make sure you make a backup of your current boot.ini):

At the command prompt:

bootcfg /copy /d Windows XP /ID1

and

bootcfg /copy /d Windows 98 /ID2

I doubt the ID will recognize the ID 0, I therefor would use the ID 1 as first (like in the example given in the link).

Ok, thanks I will try that. And I WILL make a backup of the boot.ini. So you won't see a thread on the board 'Help, I screwed up my boot' ;)

I have to wait, though, till I can work at that computer (2 brothers, you know ;D) But I think I can try it tommorrow
