Here is a message I received from Johan AXL about the fourth screenshot from Gamestar:

It's most likely not ice!

I have some vage memories from the film dune, and I think it could be some sort of salt on the mountians.

And I also don't think it's the Carryall the Missile Tank is shooting at, but the Harvester (you know, like it did in Dune 2 (the only way to shoot a Carryall down was to shoot while it was getting a unit)

All good points, it could be some sort of salt but I think I remember Westwood mentioning the beta had ice but the final version would not have it, salt would be cool though. I have taken a closer look and it does seem like the Missile Tank is firing at the Harvester, although you may be able to hit Carryalls at any time in Dune 2000, if you have anything to add send an email.
