I asked Vted of Westwood some questions about transferring maps and adding some features to the game, check below for more:

Gob: There are a few map editors currently in development for Dune2k, now with other Westwood games the maps were automatically sent out if the other person didn't have a copy. Will the same be true for Dune and is it even possible to use other non-Westwood maps in online games?

VTed: No, the maps won't automatically be sent because that feature wasn't built into the game, and there isn't any resource available for creating and sticking new maps in (except for those externally written).

Gob: Last question pertains to Houses in multiplayer, in games like Red Alert you had different options for say the Allies; France, Germany, etc. Could Westwood perhaps do the same for Dune, allowing Houses like the Emperor, Mercenary be used as well. From what I have seen from the game the Smugglers and Mercenary are based on the Harkonnen and Ordos graphics. Anyhthing like this planned?

VTed: As for future updates to the game, I don't think so. We have pretty much moved on to Tiberian Sun and a few other projects which are yet to be announced.

As you can see the map issue may cause problems but we will be setting up a map vault to host as many maps as possible in order to help you guys find them. From what I understand in order for the game to work correctly all players will need a copy of the map, if not you will most likely get out of sync errors. Although Westwood looks to be giving up on Dune 2000 we can always look forward to future Dune games, lets just hope it doesn't take 8 years for the next one...
