There are new Dune novels coming out later this year being written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The books are being released in the same way Star Wars is, as prequels to the original books written by Frank Herbert. The series will start with House Atreides, then House Harkonnen, and finally The Spice War. The storyline sounds interesting:

The love story of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, their first battles with Baron Harkonnen, the planetologist Kynes sent to the desert world of Dune to investigate the precious spice and the sandworms and the Fremen . . . and the power-hungry Crown Prince Shaddam, who would do anything to secure the Imperial throne.

The first book should be published in hard cover sometime in October of 1999 while House Harkonnen is currently being written. Also the older novels will be repackaged by Hodder & Stoughton complete with new cover art. Check out the Official Dune News site for more on these new books.
