MSN's zdnet has there list of the top ten games of 2001 up and, low and behold, E:BFD made it, just below Red Alert 2. This is what they had to say:

For a truly out-of-this-world RTS experience, you can't do better than Westwood Studios' Emperor: Battle for Dune. Based on the sci-fi universe created by Frank Herbert in the Dune novels and the 1984 David Lynch movie, this game puts you in command of one of three factions battling for control over the desert world of Arrakis. The emphasis here is on fast, intense skirmishes rather than intricate tactics, an aspect helped along by the game's automated resource gathering. With its stunning 3D effects and engaging single-play and multiplayer modes, Emperor will lead you on a glorious conquest.
