I thought, "future", new devices, new knowledge etc would improve something.

But instead dune keeps crashing, and the more I try to play it, the more it crashes.

Don't search the problem at customer side, search it in your knowledge and the program.

It's annoying. 20 years ago dune ran stable! What did 20 years improve...?

Now first a moderator will moderate my topic, and he is for sure going to block my post.

I'm sure that my idea to say "make things better" is not going conform with modern mindsets.

Well, if it will go that way, I can also delete the game.

You may need to tell us if you are trying to play the vanilla game, gruntmods or dunemaster (or none of the above).

The original is not likely to work straigh away.
Gruntmods (which it is the original game, not talking on alternatives like open Ra or anything) has patches to make the game works on modern systems, such as windows 11.
Dunemaster, the same, it is also the original game, and also patched with very similar stuff.

Usually gruntmods is more focused on single player and dunemaster on multi, but it is possible to play multi in gruntmods or single player in dunemaster.

So, whatever version you were trying to play, try to get the other one. Sometimes for some people one version crash constatly and after switching to the other don´t and viceversa. I don´t know which one you have issues, so I will place both.

Gruntmods can be obtained here:
https://gruntmods.com/dune_2000_gruntmods_edition/

And dunemaster all in one installer (includes many custom campaigns and missions) here:

This video explains what to do on both gruntmods, dunemaster, configurations and other things in case you need it:

I strongly suggest you delete the game (and keep trying). You are not playing the most recent versions and are hoping to do something that is waaaay to outdated.

Then, if you realize that you are doing something completely silly.

Try, the Gruntmonds edition. This version works on windows 10 for certain (seeing as how I could play it in some of my recent streams). And if you have windows 11. My condolences. But I am sure it will work there as well.

It's a fresh installation on a complete new computer, and it IS the most recent version.

And I am sure I do something completely silly, namely I already use gruntmods edition.

I have windows 11, yes, and I find it way more stable and useable as windows 10, which I don't find stable and useful in any way.

But you are right, under windows 10 gruntmods 1.6.2 ran stable. But that is no argument, cause I cannot go back to 10, I need 11 for my work.

It works until a few situations come up. E.g. when I buy 2 mobile building vehicles (or how they are called in english, Idk, I have the german version). As soon as they get delivered, the game crashes. I can build them my own, that works.

I had a game save, just prior to the delivery. It crashed always in the samt situation when I reloaded the savegame. I took the few seconds, the vehicles where already ordered, the arrived and the game crashed.

Another issue is (also kind of same situation, but less specific), when a lot of computerplayers try to attack me at the same time.

Thanks, so far there is nothing new.

The gruntmods patch with the 3 replaced files destroys the setup: "File not foundbin\colours.bin" - solved with reapplying some settings.

But the patch is not improvement, the game still crashes in the same situations.

This is not ready; just useless. Maybe someone can inform me when there's a windows-11-stable version...

Until then I will uninstall the game and play aoe3 ...

Thanks.

Oh, a new windows is the issue then. You need to wait for some time until Windows 11 is accesable with the Gruntmods edition.

PS. Microsoft does shady things.

come on, don't always blame windows...

it was crashing under windows 10 in the same way...

And I don't have a new version, especially not 24H2.

I have a similar if not same issue. I've installed Dune 2000 through the discs, three different versions of Gruntmods and an all in one installer from MyAbandonware. The only version of the game that does not freeze on me is the Gruntmods version that does not have the videos installed. For some reason the crashing or freezing for me happens upon mission complete or during the beginning intro after selecting a house. I'm guessing its something to do with the video format. If I find out something I'll post back.

POSSIBLE FIX: Turn off vertical sync in your graphics card control panel. Go to the global settings and turn it off. I still need to verify this works throughout the game but when picking a faction it no longer froze.

After installing 24H2 update of WIn11, in most of missions it hangs right before display "Mission complete"...

For me when it hung up the game would eventually just crash or I'd have to open task manager and end the game that way.

I'm still not sure why this is happening now though or at those points. I thought it was the videos but it's not.

Try going into your control panel for your graphics card and turn off vertical sync in the global settings. This worked for me when picking a faction.

It's late so I wasn't able to play any missions yet to verify if it helps there. I will test it tomorrow after work and get back to you.

Edit: This now does not work....not sure why it worked last night but now it does not. I'm stumped.

I can recreate the situation: I play a specific map (Das imperiale Becken), have the lower, middle field, and at the bottom right I place a "Raumhafen". As soon as I get a delivery from the Raumhafen, it crashes. No matter what happened before, it's exactly this combination.

I have a gamesave right before this happens, so for analysis it could do the job. Today I played again, not the gamesave, but new game. It happened exactly the same (The raumhafen is on exactly the same place where I always pace it).

So, all ideas with windows / incompatibility, graphic card issues etc... : NO!! It IS the game, NOT the settings!
