So I got the map to show up. The events I'll worry about at another time. However how can you add multiple companies to a map you started from scratch? Also how can you get the mission to start with the tracks, trains, stations, etc. already in place? Is that allowed?

Glad you got the map to show up.

You can start many companies and build stations and track and buy engines for them all. You need to do these things in Editor mode. Some of the buttons to do these things are in different places, but the symbols are the same. Look around and you should find them. In the editor, the player tab has buttons below the players to add new players and to switch between different chairmen (double-click). This allows you to set up companies for various players, just make sure to switch to the player you want to play the game with when you are done. In Map Options, under Players, there is a check box option "Allow user to override". Make sure this is not ticked for all the players that you want in the game. There is also an easy way to give a player cash there. I suggest doing a trial run first, as players in the editor lose their ability to attract outside investment a second time so you may not be able to easily achieve desired stock ownership level at a decent price. Good luck.
